Guidance Services

Mission Statement

It is the mission of Asa Philip Randolph school counselors to deliver a multi-layered, comprehensive, and accountable guidance program in which equity, access, and academic success for ALL students is the focus.

Our comprehensive school counseling  program  is designed to meet the needs of every student and include the following services:

Classroom guidance lessons help students understand themselves and others. Through classroom guidance, we help students develop peer relationships; effective social, decision-making, and study skills; effective communications, conflict resolution, coping strategies; and more.

Individual student planning helps students set goals, establish academic and career plans, understand their own strengths and weaknesses, and prepare for the transition to the next stage of their life.

Responsive services assist students with particular needs such as adjusting to a new school, coping with grief following a crisis, and dealing with substance abuse or other risky behaviors. These services are provided through individual and small group counseling, peer facilitation and consultation, and referrals to professionals trained in mental health, welfare, and other specialties.

System support enhances the school’s climate and relationships among members of the Randolph community. Our school counselors coordinate parent outreach services, community support services, and consultations with other faculty and staff.

Guidance Staff
The current guidance staff consist of  two school counselors.  The Lead Counselor,
Mrs. Christine J. McNair, is responsible for students in grades 9-12 in Health and Fire and Rescue Academies, and seniors in all academies.   Mrs. Linnie Rutledge is responsible for students, grades 9-12 in Information Technology, Public Safety, Cosmetology, Energy, Manufacturing & Construction as well as Possibilities and Success.

Guidance Rituals and Routines

  • Students should see the appropriate counselor by appointment for their academy and grade level.   Emergencies and crisis’s are exceptions.
  • Individual credit evaluations are completed during scheduling of classes in the spring and reviewed during the fall for accuracy.
  • Seniors have additional individual credit checks in the fall of their senior year and again in January of the senior year.  This assures graduation requirements are met.
  • Progress reports will be issued by teachers to students to be taken homeat the midpoint of each grading period.
  • Transcripts will be sent, free of charge, for current students to a post secondary institution of the student’s choice or scholarship granting agencies.  Transcript requests should be made to the guidance records clerk, in room 103.
