Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School, School of the Medical Arts (SoMA), provides high performing students an advanced academic and highly specialized overview of professional medical fields by equipping them with skills and personal experiences necessary to excel in both undergraduate and graduate programs of study.

Our academic program includes advanced, honors and Advanced Placement courses.  Students of the School of the Medical Arts will work closely with faculty members and community partners such as physicians, surgeons, veterinarians and hospital administrators throughout the program to create an environment which supports creative and independent academic exploration with real-world relevance while maintaining high academic standards.

Middle School Medical Program

Incoming Darnell-Cookman middle school students may choose to apply for the medical magnet program.  These students are concurrently assigned to advanced and/or gifted teams, and will attend advanced and/or gifted academic classes.  Medical magnet students will participate in the program during an elective period for one semester in 6th grade, and for the entire year in 7th and 8th grades.  The program is taught by the medical magnet lead teacher through guest speakers, visits to clinics and hospitals, and through hands-on experiences.  During the two and one-half year program, the students will learn a great deal about how the human body functions, the disease process, and the medical professionals who work to treat us and keep us healthy.  Students who have chosen to enter Darnell-Cookman through the medical magnet program will remain in this program for the entire time they attend Darnell-Cookman.

 High School Medical Integration

Darnell-Cookman high school students will experience an AP Scholars college preparatory program. This program will prepare them for admission to a college/university with the intentions to pursue post-graduate work or to apply to medical school. The program consists of honors and AP-level course work with a science and math foundation. Courses in Latin, Arts in Medicine and AP-level sciences provide rigorous studies for students. They will also participate in internships their junior and senior years. These internships will provide students’ exposure to professionals in the medical related field they plan to pursue in their post-secondary studies.

This year's inaugural class of the Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts has brought together 150 Duval County freshmen seeking to enhance their high school experiences with rigorous studies, theoretical training and practical experiences while studying the various practices of medical professionals.  Students who accept the challenge offered at Darnell-Cookman Middle/High, School of the Medical Arts (SoMA), will be academically prepared to be successful in the collegiate path through graduate studies for professional careers such as: Physician, Dentist, Veterinarian, Forensic Science, Hospital Administrator, Biomedical Researcher, medical/health focused Lawyer, Genetics Counselor and Health Administrator.
