Tardy Policy

RE:                 TARDINESS TO SCHOOL

Date:               August 26, 2008

Parents, it is important that students arrive at school in a timely manner in order to get to class on time.  Student arrival time is 8:00 a. m. Instruction begins promptly at 8:10 a. m.  If your child arrives between 8:10 and 8:20, the child will be placed in the late arrival tardy tank with dismissal to their first period class at 8:20 a.m. When students arrive at school late, it breaks the educational momentum of the class setting. It is suggested that you allow your child to ride the shuttle bus from the closest high school to your home to Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School-The School of the Medical Arts (SoMA). Tardiness of the school bus does not generate an unexcused tardy for your child. High school shuttle times are provided in the Parent Services area or you may contact the district transportation office (381-RIDE/381-7433) for the closest high school.

It is important for you to take a moment to review the consequences for tardiness below:

MORNING TARDY POLICY

The following Tardy to School Procedure will be implemented at Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School for the 2008-2009 year. Logging for student tardiness to school will begin on August 29, 2008.

v     First Tardy     Warning.  Student held in Tardy Tank until 8:20(no bell).   Students will be given a goldenrod slip indicating  tardiness.

v     Second Tardy      Student held in Tardy Tank.    Parent will be called.

v     Third Tardy     Student held in Tardy Tank.    Communication to parent via U. S. Mail.

v     Fourth Tardy     Student held in Tardy Tank.   Student will be assigned to lunch detention in the cafeteria.   The Assistant Principal will call parent.

v     Fifth Tardy     Student held in Tardy Tank.    Student is assigned to lunch detention in cafeteria and work detail.   A disciplinary referral for failure to follow directions will be issued.

v     Sixth Tardy     Student held in Tardy Tank.   Parent must attend a required parent conference with Mrs. Mathews/Dr. Greer/Mrs. Anderson.

v Seventh Tardy     Student held in Tardy Tank.    Parent must shadow the student for the first two periods of a school day.
