Principal's Message
Vision/Mission:
Fishweir Elementary School
is a standards-based learning community where the individual
needs of students are assessed and results are used to direct
our instruction. Data are gathered and analyzed frequently to
implement diagnostic and prescriptive instruction. As a result
of this diagnostic and prescriptive teaching philosophy, all of
our students will achieve at the highest standards. No
exceptions. No excuses.
School Profile/Demographics:
Fishweir Elementary School
is a learning community for Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade
students. It has served as the school of excellence in the
Riverside Avondale area for over 90 years. Included in our
population is the Vision Impaired Center for northeast Florida.
Our Vision Impaired Pre-K class serves students beginning on
their 3rd birthday. The Performing and Visual Arts Magnet
Program attracts students from areas outside our geographical
attendance boundary, with a waiting list at every grade level
each year. The school had earned a grade of A for five of the
last seven years
Our students consist of 66%
White, 21% Black, 7% Mixed, 3% Hispanic, and 2% Asian. 35% of
our students receive free or reduced lunches.
Fishweir History
Fishweir Elementary School
was built on the site of a former cow pasture. The school
first opened its doors to children in January, 1917, as the
community was beginning to express its concern about World
War I.
The new school was
considered one of the most up-to-date schools in the county.
Only nineteen schools preceded Fishweir (#20), many of which
have been closed, torn down, or the names have been changed.
Fishweir Elementary
School opened with a staff of three teachers. They were Mrs.
E. M. Bogard, Principal, and two other staff members. The
student body consisted of seventy students.
The original four room
building needed several additions as the area grew, due in
large part, to military bases. Classrooms were added in
1926, 1928, 1936, and 1937. In 1939, an auditorium was
built and in 1949 the cafeteria was constructed. Four rooms
were added to the front of the building in 1950. In later
years, the final addition of the Vision Impaired Wing and
the library were completed to comprise the current
structure.
