Highlands Aviation and Military Science
Academy program is designed to prepare students for future endeavors, that are
aimed at developing their interest in aviation and military careers by
interactive learning experiences through flight simulation, models, and aviation
and military related field trips.
Our magnet middle school curriculum is
integrated with fascinating aviation and military science topics which enrich
students' learning experience. Our aviation ground school and military science
curriculums are developed in conjunction with consultants from Jacksonville
University’s Aeronautical Department. Further, the consultants work hands-on
with our teachers across all grade levels and within all areas of academics
in integrating the aviation and military science theme throughout the school
curriculums.
The aviation ground elective places students
in the cockpit of an aircraft using our on-site flight simulators.
Radio-controlled planes, rockets and models are used to teach the principles
and concepts of flight, navigation, geography, and the adverse effects of
weather on aviation and aviators.
The military science elective focuses on
military history, leadership, career opportunities, research, and department of
defense organization and structure. Students develop team building skills and
improved personal fitness in the Personal Training elective using a variety of
gym equipment, including a rock climbing wall, and Low and High Ropes Challenge
courses.
After school activities range from a band and
dance/flag corps, cheerleading, and team-up. Major sports programs such as
baseball, basketball, football, soccer, and track are also available for student
participation.
All students are required to wear a school
uniform consisting of a royal blue Highlands crested school shirt, khaki pants,
black belt and black shoes. Summer enrichment camps and field trips are also
available for HAMSA magnet students.
