Click the newspaper	Julia Landon *Julia Landon, the Woman behind the Name…..* Two years following the end of the Civil War in 1865, John and Mary Landon moved their small family from Piqua, Ohio, to what is now Jacksonville, Florida. John Landon bought eight acres of land, opened an orange grove, and built a log cabin in which his family was to live until 1890, when a ten room home housing three generations of Landons was built. This family was that of Julia Landon, and the ten room home built by her father on Arcadia Lane was where she continued to live and where she died on August 3, 1939, just short of her 75^th birthday. Julia Landon and her sister, Minerva, grew up in the time where there was no school on the Southside, and the only way to get to town was by ferry. The Landon sisters went to a little school near what is now known as St. Nicholas. Miss Landon was just 16-years old when she began teaching. She later attended college in Maryville, Tennessee, and became a well known educator in Jacksonville schools on the Southside where she left her mark through service to her church and community. When it was decided that a senior high school would be built on the Southside, a petition was circulated to have the school named in honor of Julia Landon. The school was built on Landon family land near her home on Arcadia Lane. Miss Landon was proud of her namesake and attended every graduation as an honored guest until her death in 1939. Once when she was questioned about the school, she remarked, “Why, that’s the finest school in the whole country.” Julia Landon’s name endures. Service to her community was done in her living years, but her heritage is preserved in the lives of those she touched and those who fondly remember the school named in her honor. Miss Landon’s love of education and her spirit of community service are being passed on to new generations who will walk the hallowed halls at Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership Development School.
