What will be the
core academic program at the Julia Landon College Preparatory and
Leadership Development School?
Students enrolled
in the College Preparatory Program must be enrolled in advanced or
gifted program classes for their core coursework. Students must be
staffed for gifted program services prior to being assigned to gifted
coursework.
What electives
will be available for my child?
In addition to
traditional elective offerings, all students will be required to
participate in a series of electives specifically designed to develop an
awareness of leadership skills in the global community. The traditional
electives may include band/chorus, drama, art, foreign language,
television production, and technology.
Will there be
athletics or extracurricular programs for students?
Athletics will be
available to seventh and eighth grade students. Extracurricular clubs
supporting the leadership theme, as well as traditional middle school
extracurricular activities such as National Junior Honor Society,
Scholar Bowl, and Math Field Day Team may be available for appropriate
grade level.
Are students
attending the Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership
Development School given program continuity to Paxon School for Advanced
Studies and Stanton College Preparatory School?
Students
attending the Julia Landon College Preparatory and Leadership
Development School will be given program continuity to Paxon School for
Advanced Studies, Stanton College Preparatory School, and the new
Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts (Grades 9 – 12).
What are the
school hours?
School will begin at 7:50 a.m. and dismiss at 2:05 p.m.
Will
transportation be provided to the Julia Landon College Preparatory and
Leadership Development School?
Duval
County's entire TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM is currently under
review. Due to anticipated shortfalls in the budget, the
same level of service that has traditionally been provided
for both neighborhood and magnet students may not be
possible for the 2009-2010 school year. When considering
school choice options, parents should be aware that cutbacks
or elimination of some bus service is possible.

Advanced
and Gifted Mathematics
Math
placements are based on FCAT scores.
Advanced and Gifted
Mathematics Grade Six:
Students
investigate the properties of fractions, decimals, percents, and
integers.
Pre-Algebra:
In addition to
fractions, decimals, percents, and integers, students investigate
ratios, proportions, and irrational numbers.
Algebra:
Students
investigate symbols, rules of algebra, polynomial expressions and
operations, graphing parabolas and identifying their relationships.
Geometry:
Students describe,
draw, identify, and analyze two- and three-dimensional shapes. Students
visualize and illustrate ways in which shapes can be combined,
subdivided and changed. Students use coordinate geometry to locate
objects in both two and three dimensions to describe objects
algebraically.
As students study
mathematics, they will learn about leaders in the field of mathematics
who have left their marks in research, engineering, architecture, and
the global
economy.
Advanced and Gifted Science
The
purpose of Comprehensive Science in grades six through eight is to
provide opportunities to study concepts of the life, earth/space, and
physical sciences, and their applications to everyday life. Students
will explore the nature of science, the nature of matter, energy, force
and motion, processes that shape the Earth, Earth and space, processes
of life, how living things interact with their environment, and related
topics.
The
student will:

…understand the basic principles of atomic theory.
…recognize that energy may be changed in form.
…understand the types of motion and force.
…understand the processes that interact to shape the Earth.
…understand the need for protection of the natural systems on Earth.

Students will explore how leaders in scientific thinking have made
contributions in fields such as medicine, conservation, and the use of
natural resources.
All
students are required to research, prepare, and present a Science Fair
Project at each grade level.
Advanced and Gifted Language Arts
Language Arts placements are based on FCAT scores.
The
purpose of this course at each grade level is to provide integrated
educational experiences in the language arts strands of reading,
writing, listening, viewing, speaking, language, and literature.
The
student will:
…construct meaning from a wide range of texts.
…write to communicate ideas and information effectively.
…use
listening strategies effectively.
…use
viewing strategies effectively.
…use
speaking strategies effectively.
…understand the power of language.
…understand the common features of a variety of literary forms.
Effective
leaders develop and use good communication skills. Students will come
to understand the power of language in leadership as they practice
listening, viewing, and speaking strategies.
Advanced and Gifted Social Studies
World
History:
In
the sixth grade, students will come to understand the development of the
world community within the context of history.
Geography:
In
the seventh grade, students will develop a multicultural understanding
and use geography concepts and skills to apply decision-making processes
to real-life situations.
American History:
In
the eighth grade, students will actively seek information and
systematically apply decision-making processes to real-life situations
in relation to the formation and development of our nation.
At
each grade level students will develop an understanding of how
leadership effected the growth of society, the establishment of a legal
system, the advance of politics, and the development of government.
All
students are required to research, prepare, and present a History Fair
Project at each grade level.
Electives, Physical Education
and
Extra-Curricular Activities
As a part of a well
rounded education, all students at Julia Landon College Prep will
participate in a program of electives and physical education.
Electives:
A Leadership
elective is required at each grade level.
Sixth grade
students explore leadership styles and begin to identify their personal
strengths and weaknesses through the study of Covey’s 7 Habits of
Highly Effective Teens.
Seventh grade
students explore leadership opportunities within the community and take
part in a community service project. The use of technology is an
important part of this course.
Eighth grade
students will explore leadership in the global world and create a
technology based project to be presented at the annual Leadership
Symposium at the end of the eighth grade year.
In addition of the
Leadership elective, students will be offered traditional electives from
music, the arts, and foreign language.
Physical Education:
Students at each
grade level will participate in the physical education program. As a
part of the program, all students are required to study health education
for one nine week period.
Extra-Curricular
Activities:
Students at every
grade level may participate in after school clubs. Seventh and eighth
grade students are encouraged to participate in the after school
sporting programs.
