Introduction
Active Physics was developed by Dr.
Arthur
Eisenkraft and leading physicists, physics teachers and science
educators under
the auspices of the American Association of Physics Teachers and the
American
Institute of Physics.
Each Active Physics chapter was written by a dedicated team of
physicists and high school teachers, supported by prominent technical
editors,
educational technology specialists, cognitive scientists and math
curriculum
specialists.
Usual physics course work
over the
year is very predictable: mechanics in the fall, followed by waves in
the
winter, then electricity and magnetism in the spring. In contrast, Active
Physics
takes a whole new approach. Keeping the National Science Education
Standards in
mind, it includes thematic science units the students can relate to:
Communication; Home; Medicine; Predictions; Sports; Transportation and
Light Up
My Life. We will be using the Sports, Home, Communications, and
Transportation
modules.
Grading
Your
total class grade is calculated as follows:
10
to 20% Will be the accumulated
average of your group’s, or personal chapter challenges.
30 to 40% Will be the
accumulated average of your journal (For You to Do, Physics to Go,
Classwork,
Homework, etc.), and daily grades.
50% will be the accumulated
average of all test or quiz grades.
Required Materials
1) Your
current Active Physics book
(Sports, Transportation, Home, or
Communications)
2) Writing
utensil--- Pencil.
3) Physics
Note/ Logbook – a
hardbound composition book is required. All classroom
work will be placed in your notebook following the rubric for written
work.
This will be your portfolio.
4) Scientific
calculator - an
inexpensive ($10) calculator with basic trig functions
may be obtained from K-Mart, Wal-Mart, or an office supply store.
