Overview
The International Logistics Career Academy at Robert E. Lee High School is a school within a school. This industry driven academy incorporates a number of innovative features, including a family-like atmosphere, integration of academic and career-related curriculum, and the involvement of employers in a number of roles. The academy instructors are focused on training students in the fastest growing industry in the world, “Logistics”. The students are exposed to a wide variety of motivational activities that enhance classroom instruction including guest speakers, field studies, field trips, job shadowing, paid workplace internships, and mentoring.
The 2010 – 2011 school year is the Academy’s first year. Students are selected primarily because of their interest in Logistics. The program is voluntary: students must apply and be interviewed. Currently, we have 2 Cohort classes with a combined total of thirty-four 9th grade students enrolled in the Cohort. These students have 3 core academic classes and one career-related class taken within the Academy, and other courses taken in regular classes. We will increase the enrollment of the academy each school year with incoming 9th graders. These students are the neighborhood students and they are not in any other community at the school.
This school year we have planned a number of field trips and job shadowing opportunities for the students. We will attend the Global Student Summit at the Haskell Corporation, FSCJ Logistics Showcase, and we will visit CSX Transportation’s Automotive Facility. Other field trips are also being planned for this school year.
Academy Courses
Academy students will take Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management in the 9th grade, Introduction to Information Technology Applications in the 10th grade, Warehouse Operations and Material Handling Handing 1 in the 11th grade. The 1st semester of their senior year the students will take Warehousing Operations and Material Handling 2 and the 2nd semester of their senior year the students will work in the workplace on paid internships.
It is our goal to prepare our academy students for jobs in the field of International Logistics, as we want them to graduate from Lee with a high school diploma and an industry credential in Logistics. These will enable our students to obtain meaningful employment and/or go on to College for more education and training in Logistics. Students who successfully complete 3 of the 4 academy classes above will possibly qualify for the Gold Seal College Scholarship. |
