Second Grade News

Dear Parents and Families,
We are entering the second half of this school year. We have accomplished so much but still have a lot of work ahead of us. The coming months will be full of learning and special activities for our students.
We are excited to announce that second grade will perform Woolbur, a play full of delightful music about a mischievous sheep, at our February PTA meeting. The program will be on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 7 p.m. in our school cafeteria. Students need to wear jeans and a white golf shirt or t-shirt and tennis shoes. You will not want to miss this event!
We are working on scheduling another field trip and will be sending information home as this becomes available. All field trip chaperones and volunteers (including school-wide and classroom volunteers) must register on-line at duvalschools.org (under “community” section – see “volunteer information”). Please allow two weeks for processing. As a reminder, each class will be wearing a specific color t-shirt on field trips.

Class Colors:

Mrs. Huber/Ms. Ley – Green

Ms. Miller – Yellow

Mrs. Quillen - Orange

Mr. Schultz – Royal Blue

Mrs. Brock - Red

Mrs. Smith - White

In the coming weeks your child will be learning reading strategies such as making judgments, summarizing, identifying the main idea and supporting details, making predictions, and evaluating literature. We recently began functional writing (how to do something). The students look forward to writing each day because they enjoy this form of writing so much. Our social studies will focus on people at work and learning about people as “producers” and “consumers.” In mathematics, students are developing strategies for understanding, interpreting, and extending patterns. We are learning about our heart, lungs, and brain in science. Following this unit, we will begin observing and measuring properties of matter.

Please note that Spring Break is Monday, March 19, 2012 through Friday, March 23, 2012. We will resume school on Monday, March 26, 2012.

As you can see, we are a busy group of second graders. Please make every effort possible to have your child at school on time and present each day.

Thank you for your continued support,
Second Grade Teachers
