Kindergarten Reading Standards

 

Children must:

  • Recognize and name all letters of alphabet
  • Write and match letters and sounds
  • Write words phonetically
  • Recognize and make rhyming words
  • isolate initial consonants in single syllable words
  • blend initial consonants to form new words
  • Choose reading as a way to enjoy free time and ask for books to be read aloud
  • Listen to one or two books read aloud each day in school and discuss with teacher
  • Listen to one or two books read to them each day at home or in after school care
  • Reads or rereads along with two to four familiar books each day
  • Reads a variety of genres
  • Holds book correctly.
  • Turns pages correctly
  • Follows text with finger, pointing to word as read
  • Pays attention to what words they are reading
  • Shows reaction to books
  • Listens carefully to each other
  • Relates comments to what others have said
  • Asks others to clarify
  • Uses newly learned vocabulary
  • Identifies words from "read alouds" that they don't know and can guess definitions
  • Talks about words and meanings as they are encountered in books and conversation
  • Shows interest in words
  • Learns new words every day
