Writing Standards:

Child must:

  • Write daily
  • Create ideas for writing
  • Write frequently when given opportunity
  • Use variety of ways to communicate (drawings, scribbles, gestures, and role playing)
  • Make effort to reread writing
  • Listen to writing of others and respond appropriately
  • Create narrative stories
  • Show beginning of story
  • Show middle of story
  • Show end of story
  • Incorporate drawing in story
  • Use storybook language ( "once upon a time" and "they lived happily ever after")
  • Collects and shares information for informational writing
  • Stays on topic
  • Role-plays stories
  • Creates stories
  • Uses rhythm and style (rhyming repetition and alliteration)
  • Tells someone what to do
  • Names objects and places in story
  • Uses oral and written language  to convey ideas
  • Uses words in their writing from conversation and books
  • Chooses words to convey meaning
  • Leaves spaces between words
  • Controls directionality (writes left to right, starts on top of page and moves down)
  • Represents words frequently with initial consonant sounds
