Spring 2011 marks the first time
students will be tested on the
Next Generation Sunshine State
Standards. In order to assess
these new standards, new
assessments to measure student
success, such as FCAT 2.0 were
created. Until the transition is
complete, selected grades and
subjects will continue to
participate in the FCAT
assessments. For a better
understanding of Florida's new
and old assessments keep

-
FCAT: The Florida
Comprehensive Assessment
TestŪ, which began for
select grades in 1998, is
administered to students in
grades 3 - 11, approximately
200,000 students per grade.
The FCAT measures the
Sunshine State Standards in
reading and mathematics
(grades 3-10), science
(grades 5, 8, & 11), and
writing (grades 4, 8, & 10).
-
FCAT 2.0: The FCAT 2.0
measures student achievement
of the Next Generation
Sunshine State Standards,
which were adopted in 2007.
The transition from FCAT to
FCAT 2.0 will be phased in
over time, with FCAT 2.0
Reading and Mathematics
being the first assessments
to take place in Spring
2011. FCAT 2.0 Science will
be administered to students
for the first time in the
spring of 2012. More detail
about the transition to FCAT
2.0 is available.

Florida End-of-Course
Assessments: The Florida
EOC
Assessments are part of
Florida's Next Generation
Strategic Plan aimed at
better aligning our testing
structure in order to assess
a year's worth of learning
at the close of the school
year. Florida's EOCs
will be computer-based
assessments that measure the
Next Generation Sunshine
State Standards for specific
high-school level courses.
The first assessment to
begin the transition to
end-of-course testing in
Florida is the Algebra 1
EOC,
which will be administered
for the first time in May
2011.
