MEDIA SPECIALIST
Lucretia Miller, Chaffee Trail Elementary

Word wall – Even the Media Center can have a word wall including such words as Internet, guide words, dictionary…

Graphic organizers – Graphic organizers have a thousand uses and help children with all different learning styles organize their work. In this case the Media Specialist uses a graphic organizer to gather and organize information that the children are learning and then presenting in the content area.

Cooperative group work – Reviewing a concept and then asking students to get together in groups to apply the concept is a way of synthesizing the information and giving a student who may not understand all the nuances of the concept a comfortable place for discussion and clarification. In this lessons students work together to produce a story board.

Content integration – Projects can easily reinforce classroom learning. In this case, the Media Specialist lifts a content area from the 2nd grade Science/ Social Studies curriculum, the Rainforest. She reviews non-fiction text features such as the Table of Contents, Captions, Index as she builds content knowledge by reading non-fiction literature about the Amazon Rainforest. She reviews the narrative elements as she talks about stories the children have written about the Rainforest, reinforcing the Language Arts standards being taught in the classroom. Previous to this lesson she invited the students to draw pictures of the rainforest to present their knowledge in an art media. She used these projects to provide descriptive feedback for the students about the elements found in a typical rainforest.

Technology integration – In the project above the teacher integrates technology by using Garage Band as background for the story that the students wrote. As the students read the story into a mike, she praises their fluency and intonation, again reinforcing classroom instruction. See their podcast at…
