The Purpose
of the Principal’s Book of the Month
The purpose of
The Principal’s Book of the Month is to have one book each month
that everyone in the school reads and discusses throughout the
month. The book should have a strong message, (theme) that the
principal would like for students, staff and their families to
discuss and think about. The Principal’s Book of the Month is used
to build community, a positive school culture and character traits.
The book is used as an example of good
writing craft and should be referred to throughout the month to
teach writers workshop. The book should be revisited multiple times
throughout the month during readers workshop to practice reading and
thinking strategies. The books are wonderful to teach interesting
vocabulary, thoughtful word choice and they are great for students
to use for collecting words!
Teachers are encouraged to carefully
plan, Read Aloud/ Think Aloud Lessons, spending time on developing
higher level questions. It is critical that teachers model for
students how to go back into the text to find or infer the answers
to the more difficult questions. Each time you revisit the book
there can be a different teaching focus.
Some books may be more complex and more
difficult for our younger students, in that case the book
may need to be read over several days taking the time
to stop and discuss frequently. The first few readings may be
picture walks and a retelling by the teacher, each time the book is
revisited the language, questions, thinking and discussion becomes
more advanced.
Each month students should respond to The
Principal’s Book of Month. The response can be a class response
written together after a culminating activity and based on the
reading standard Discussing Books: responding to text. Several times
a year students should write a formal response based on the writing
standard for Response to Literature.
During the last week of the month student
responses should be posted on The Principal’s Book of the Month
standards based bulletin board in the classroom. Once a year each
class will be asked to display their work on The Principal’s Book of
the Month Bulletin Board in the Administration Building.
Teachers on each grade level will be
asked to prepare and share a The Principal’s Book of the Month
Idea Sheet. Teachers and parents can use these ideas with the
monthly selection. The idea sheet is to be submitted to the
principal on the last Wednesday, two months prior to the book
selection. It will be posted on the school website, included in the
school newsletter and emailed to parents for use throughout the
month of each book selection.
The most important reason for The
Principal’s Book of the Month is to share exceptional books with
students and enjoy them. Students learn to love reading when we love
reading great books together!
Enjoy!
