Brain Brawlers!

We have moved into the next phase of the competition with weekly head to head matches and new questions. It has been great to see the students excited and engaged in the competition!

 Junior Varsity

As you know our Junior Varsity matches are scheduled for January 26 and February 9, from 8am-12pm at Wolfson High School. Here are the schools I have listed for the event. If your school is not on the list or will not be participating I need to know immediately. Also following is a list of each coach and the positions you indicated you could fill. With 20 teams we will need to staff 5 rooms for each of the 4 hours. If you are not able to attend, or need to update or include your availability, let me know by Friday, January 18. (Code: J:Judge, S:Scorekeeper, T: Timekeeper)

Also it has been brought to my attention that SAT testing is set for January 26. If this is a significant problem for this competition we would need to change the dates to February 9 and February 23. Let me now by noon on January 18, and I will send out the final decision by the end of that day.

Location

The matches for the month of January are held at the Duval County Public Schools Building at 1701 Prudential Dr on the 5th floor in Room 513D or next door in 503. These are large conference rooms on the floor and accommodate both teams and a few spectators. There is also a cafeteria with vending machines and comfortable seating where teams can congregate and await their matches. The central location and ease of parking now that the adjacent overflow lot is open make it accessible to all our Brain Brawlers.

 Schedule

Please continue to check the Brain Brawl website for results and schedules as we go forward.

Taping/Broadcast

We have quotes from WJCT to tape 5-7 matches in their studio; however, the renovations currently underway would necessitate delaying the last two-three weeks of the season and could pose a challenge for the Commissioners’ Academic Challenge team. A more promising proposal comes from Jacksonville’s new WJXE, which broadcasts over the air on 15 and on Comcast 14. They have the DCPS high school sports contract and are vey interested in adding Brain Brawl to that package for marketing purposes. Right now the best option seems to be bringing a WJXE crew to Douglas Anderson for taping on our current schedule – again for about the lat 5-7 matches. Details should be finalized soon. Thanks for your patience and support as we try to get this priority accomplished!

Questions

We have used the new questions since the beginning of January. For the most part they have been well received, and the ease of use and equity is certainly an upgrade. We are currently working to eliminate some wordiness and redundancy – especially as we anticipate the move to television.

Thanks for making Brain Brawl a “Competition with High IQ: Integrity and Quality!”
