Title: 6.  CHALLENGE GRANT COLLABORATIVE CURRICULUM

Requested Action:

  1. APPROVE SUBMISSION OF THE CHALLENGE GRANT COLLABORATIVE CURRICULUM PROJECT IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $50,000.
  2. UPON NOTIFICATION OF AWARD, APPROVE ACCEPTANCE OF THESE GRANT FUNDS AND THEIR BUDGETING IN THE APPROPRIATE PART I, GENERAL REVENUE BUDGET RESOLUTION; AND APPROVE ANY AMENDMENTS REQUIRED TO FULLY IMPLEMENT THIS GRANT.

Summary Explanation and Background:

The purpose of this grant is to enhance the academic performance of students who are gifted through the innovative approaches to instruction and collaboration. Gifted students will participate in programs to provide goals and objectives that reflect a focus on the reading initiative, specifically Just Read, Florida!, and writing to develop greater knowledge and intellectual skills with challenging activities as they use more advanced reading, resource and research materials.

 

The application deadline is January 23, 2004. The project period is June 1, 2004 through June 30, 2005.

 

Only 5 grant applications may be submitted per district. The application was open to all Duval schools. The following schools have chosen to submit an application:

  1. Susie E. Tolbert Elementary School
  2. James Weldon Johnson Middle School
  3. LaVilla School of the Arts – Think Tank
  4. LaVilla School of the Arts – The Outdoor Classroom
  5. Mandarin Middle School

Funds are predominately being used for supplies, materials, and teacher release time.

Approximately  $10,000 per applicant
