Title: 6.  SOCIAL STUDIES INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ADOPTION FOR ADVANCED PLACEMENT WORLD HISTORY

Requested Action:
APPROVE THE PROPOSED ADOPTION FOR ADVANCED PLACEMENT WORLD HISTORY INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS AS OUTLINED BELOW BEGINNING IN THE 2005-2006 SCHOOL YEAR.

Summary Explanation and Background:

In alignment with the Comprehensive Educational Plan for the social studies curriculum and instruction, the Social Studies department recommends that the School Board approve the use of and provide all Advanced Placement World History classes with the instructional materials listed below.  The instructional materials selected for this course are on the State’s list of approved textbooks and have been correlated and aligned with the Sunshine State Standards.

The selection process was completed by a committee consisting of classroom teachers.  The committee members examined all the textbooks for this course on the State’s list of approved textbooks.  Each member used a rubric to rate the textbooks in the following areas: content (including alignment with state standards), presentation, learning (including reading and learning strategies), and adherence to district requirements.  The committee was formed following the Board’s approval of the addition of this course to the District’s Course Title File in October 2004.

The instructional materials selected for adoption support the goals of the Duval County social studies program by providing the tools necessary for student achievement in meeting state and national standards.

A sample of the textbook recommended for adoption for Advanced Placement World History will be available for review at the Social Studies office.
