AGENDA - Curriculum and Instructional Services

Title: 1.  2006-07 DISTRICT AND STATE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS

Requested Action:
APPROVE THE ANNUAL DISTRICT AND STATE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS EFFECTIVE THROUGH DECEMBER 2007.

Summary Explanation and Background:

In accordance with Florida Statute, school boards are required to annually approve implementation of new, amended, or continuation School Improvement Plans for all district schools.  The current School Improvement Plans were approved in December 2005 effective through December 2006.

The School Improvement Plans are designed to achieve all state education goals and student performance standards and address issues relative to budget, training, instructional materials, technology, staffing, student support services, and other matters of resource allocation as mandated by Statute and/or School Board policy.  Each school may add, at their discretion, goals to address school-specific issues.  Each School Improvement Plan has been reviewed and approved by the appropriate School Cluster Chief or Executive Director.  Once each School Improvement Plan has been approved by the Board, any future revision, amendment, or other modification must have the approval of the appropriate Cluster Chief and will be made available for review by the appropriate Board member.

Many of our schools are also required by the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) to complete School Improvement Plans that satisfy additional FDOE requirements.  These schools include Title I schools that have failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two or more years and failing schools.  To keep these schools from having to complete two different plans, Duval County redesigned its School Improvement Plan format to be in line with the template used by FDOE.  This will allow those schools that are required to do both plans to simply copy and paste the contents of their Duval County plan, once approved by the School Board, into the FDOE template online.

Each school's proposed District School Improvement Plan will be available for review by Board members on the district's website at http://dcpsweb/reseval/SIP/2007/Default.asp no later than November 22, 2006.  However, to enable Board members sufficient time to review the proposed plans, Instructional Research staff will send e-mail notifications as proposed School Improvement Plans are posted prior to that date.
