AGENDA - Curriculum and Instructional Services

Title:

12.  PURCHASE OF SPRINGBOARD MATERIALS FOR 2007-08

Requested Action:

THAT THE DUVAL COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVE THE PURCHASE OF SPRINGBOARD MATERIALS (STUDENT HANDBOOKS, SUPPLEMENTAL MATERALS, AND SOME TEACHER GUIDES) FOR ENGLISH AND MATHEMATICS FOR GRADES 8-12 IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $1,200,000.

Summary Explanation and Background:

SpringBoard is the College Board’s rigorous program in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics for grades 6–12, which is aligned both to state standards and to the College Board Standards for College Success. The program supports secondary schools as they create a culture of high achievement and high expectations, promote a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, increase access to that curriculum, and foster post-secondary aspirations in all students.

During the current 2006-07 school year, the district implemented the SpringBoard ELA and Mathematics curriculum in the 9th and 10th grades of 8 EXCELerator schools.  For 2007-08, the district recommends adopting the SpringBoard ELA and Mathematics curriculum in all of its high schools, grades 9-12, and in the 8th grade of all of its middle schools.  This would include 19 high schools, 28 middle schools and 3 alternative schools.

Approval of this item would allow the purchase of SpringBoard materials for these schools. Materials include student handbooks, supplemental materials, and some teacher guides in an amount not to exceed $1,200,000.  Approval at this time would allow us to order the materials at the beginning of the fiscal year so they will be available at the beginning of school.
