Requested Action:
THAT THE DUVAL COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVE THE PURCHASE OF EVERY DAY COUNTS CALENDAR MATH FROM GREAT SOURCE PUBLISHING IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $485,000. THESE MATERIALS WILL BE USED FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIVE.
Summary Explanation and Background:
The Every Day Counts Calendar Math are additional materials to be used with Kindergarten through fifth grade students. Every Day Counts is a research-based program aligned with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and the Florida Sunshine State Standards. In just 10–15 minutes each day, Every Day Counts provides daily exposure to critical math concepts such as place value, mental math, measurement, time, money, geometry, estimation, patterns and algebraic thinking, graphing, and statistics. These materials will assist teachers in better preparing students for the next grade level and for standardized testing. This program will be used in addition to our adopted instructional materials – Investigations in Number, Data, and Space. A committee of mathematics resource teachers reviewed five programs and determined that Every Day Counts Calendar Math was the most appropriate based on filling gaps in the current materials, usability by teachers, and affordability.
