AGENDA - Curriculum and Instructional Services

Title: 2.  PURCHASE OF SUPPLEMENTARY ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS WORKBOOKS FOR ALL TITLE I ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

Requested Action:
THAT THE DUVAL COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVE THE PURCHASE OF EVERY DAY COUNTS CALENDAR MATH WORKBOOKS FROM GREAT SOURCE PUBLISHING IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $330,000.  THESE MATERIALS WILL BE USED FOR ALL TITLE I ELEMENTARY STUDENTS IN GRADES FIRST THROUGH FIFTH IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE CALENDAR MATH KITS THAT WERE PURCHASED FOR ALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

Summary Explanation and Background:

The Every Day Counts Calendar Math are additional materials to be used with first through fifth grade students.  Every Day Counts is a research-based program aligned with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and the Florida Sunshine State Standards. In just 10–15 minutes each day, Every Day Counts provides daily exposure to critical math concepts such as place value, mental math, measurement, time, money, geometry, estimation, patterns and algebraic thinking, graphing, and statistics.  Every Day Counts Calendar Math includes skills-based student workbooks that support the kit-based program.  These workbooks are available for grades first through fifth and will assist teachers in better preparing students for the next grade level and for standardized testing.  This program will be used in addition to our adopted instructional materials – Investigations in Number, Data, and Space.  A committee of mathematics resource teachers reviewed five programs and determined that Every Day Counts Calendar Math was the most appropriate based on filling gaps in the current materials, usability by teachers, and affordability.  These workbooks will be purchased for all Title I schools including Wayman Academy of the Arts Charter school.
