Title: 2. APPROVAL OF DISTRICT CALENDARS FOR SCHOOL YEARS 2008-09, 2009-10, AND 2010-11
Requested Action:
THAT THE DUVAL COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVE THE RECOMMENDED DISTRICT CALENDARS FOR THE 2008-09, 2009-10, AND 2010-11 SCHOOL YEARS.
Summary Explanation and Background:
The District Calendar Committee, which is comprised of members who represent all major operations of the school district, secondary school principals, elementary school principals, the County Council of PTAs, the District and School Advisory Councils, and Duval Teachers United, developed the recommended calendars for the 2008-09, 2009-10, and 2010-11 school years.
The recommended calendars resemble, for the most part, the calendar for the current school year and each includes the following major features:
· The school year begins no earlier than 14 days prior to Labor Day as designated by Florida Statute,
· The first semester continues after students and teachers return from the Winter Break and does not end until mid-January,
· A day dedicated to teacher training is included during the week prior to students reporting back to school,
· Spring Break falls the first full week following the administration of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT),
· Five days have been incorporated into each calendar between October 1 and February 1 and are designated as “weather days” to be utilized as school days should the need arise.
If regularly scheduled school days are lost due to emergencies, the designated “weather days” will be converted to school days in chronological order based on the next available designated “weather day”.
Note: In the event that it is unnecessary to convert one or more of the designated “weather days” to a school day, those days will be treated as “Schools Closed” and will be work days only for 12-month personnel.
It is also important to note that this recommendation was generated with input from a variety of sources including:
· The District, Area, and School Advisory Councils
· Duval Teachers United
· The Executive Board of the County Council of PTAs
