Title: 11. PARTICIPATION IN THE 2007-2008 CLASSROOMS FOR KIDS PROGRAM ALLOCATION (CLASS SIZE REDUCTION)
Requested Action:
THAT THE DUVAL COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVE THE ATTACHED CERTIFICATION AND PROJECT LIST IN THE AMOUNT OF $12,265,719, AND AN APPROPRIATE BUDGET RESOLUTION.
Summary Explanation and Background:
Section 1 of Article IX of the State Constitution was amended in November 2002 establishing, by the beginning of the 2010-11 school year, the maximum number of students in core-curricula courses assigned to a teacher in each of the following three grade groupings: (1) Pre‑kindergarten through 3, 18 students; (2) grades 4 through 8, 22 students; and (3) grades 9 through 12, 25 students. Beginning with the 2003-2004 fiscal year, the Legislature shall provide sufficient funds to reduce the average number of students in each classroom by at least two-students-per-year until the number of students per classrooms does not exceed the maximum.
The Department of Education notified all districts of the 2007-2008 Classrooms for Kids Program funding allocations. Duval County Public Schools was allocated $12,265,719.
