Title: 10. READING COACHES MODEL GRANT
Requested Action:

CONFIRM SUBMISSION OF THE READING COACHES MODEL GRANT IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $1,220,000.
- UPON NOTIFICATION OF AWARD, APPROVE ACCEPTANCE OF THESE GRANT FUNDS AND THEIR BUDGETING IN THE APPROPRIATE PART I, GENERAL REVENUE BUDGET RESOLUTION; AND APPROVE ANY AMENDMENTS REQUIRED TO FULLY IMPLEMENT THIS GRANT.
Summary Explanation and Background:
The Reading Coaches Model Grant is offered by the Just Read, Florida! Office, Florida Department of Education. The intent of this grant is to provide resources for districts to hire or maintain reading coaches for non-Reading First elementary schools (grades K-5), Reading First elementary schools (grades 4 and 5), middle schools, and high schools with low-performing students.
The reading coach will serve as a stable resource of professional development, progress monitoring, and student data analysis throughout a school to generate improvement in reading instruction and reading achievement. Reading coaches will be expected to exhibit knowledge of scientifically based reading research, special expertise in high-quality reading instruction, and data management skills. The reading coach will both support and provide initial and ongoing professional development to teachers in each of the major reading components, administration and interpretation of instructional assessments, and differentiated instruction. Reading coaches will model effective instructional strategies for teachers; facilitate study groups; train teachers in data analysis; coach and mentor colleagues; and, in general, provide daily support to classroom teachers. They will work with teachers to ensure high-fidelity implementations of research-based reading program(s), Comprehensive Core Curriculum Reading Programs (CCRPs) and Supplemental Reading Programs (SRPs).
The district just concluded the 2002-2003 Reading Coaches grant and used the end of the year funds for summer camp teachers. The grant will be competitive. The deadline is August 4, 2003.
