Title:

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT GRANT APPLICATION SUBMITTAL

Requested Action:

APPROVE SUBMISSION OF A SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT GRANT APPLICATION TO THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $760,561.30 AND ANY SUBSEQUENT AMENDMENTS.

 

AUTHORIZE THE BUDGETING OF THESE FUNDS IN THE APPROPRIATE PART IV, SPECIAL REVENUE BUDGET RESOLUTION.

Summary Explanation and Background:

The Florida Department of Education has allocated Title I School Improvement funds to Title I Schoolwide Project schools having received a State Report Card grade of “F” in 2002 and schools which received grades in the lower ranges of the “D” category with a high concentration of children from low income families.

 

Thirteen schools will receive the following funds upon acceptance of the grant application:    

Daniel Payne Academy                                             $ 20,679.58

Lola Culver Elementary                                             $ 30,404.57

Matthew Gilbert Middle                                             $ 84,618.59

Rufus Payne Elementary                                           $ 59,244.19

West Jacksonville Elementary                                    $ 49,295.64

George Washington Carver Elementary                        $ 51,866.61

Eugene Butler Middle                                                $ 84,842.16

Rutledge Pearson Elementary                                     $ 35,881.86

Northwestern Middle                                                $109,210.52

Reynolds Lane Elementary                                         $ 44,936.16

Long Branch Elementary                                           $ 40,464.90

Smart Pope Livingston Elementary                              $ 76,234.98

Saint Clair Evans Academy                                        $ 72,881.54

 

These funds must be used in support of specific activities and objectives contained in the school’s School Improvement Plan (SIP), integrated with applicable Title I requirements contained in Sections 1114 and 1116 of Title I of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.  These funds will be used to implement school improvement plans which may include the following:  extending the school day, conducting professional development, enhancing parental involvement, strengthening the curriculum of a Research-Based Model, purchasing materials and supplies to support the initiative, adding supplemental reading or family literacy teachers, and/or enhancing other federal programs in the school.

 

The funding period is upon receipt through June 30, 2003.
