Comments from Audience
- COMMENTS FROM AUDIENCE
Minutes: Ms. Marty Clark has two children at Lee High School; speaking as a "Mom" and requesting that the district provide system-wide transportation to Lee High School; 504 Plan - special needs; and as a social worker - we're in trouble in Duval County - we need to provide an option for these students to learn differently.
Ms. Amber Cottle requested that transportation be considered to Lee High School from the beaches.
Mr. Arthur Roberts, vice principal at Kirby Smith Middle School, spoke about the academic magnet to continue at the high school level at Lee High; transportation should be provided.
Mr. James Crawford said that his grandson would not have transportation from Kirby Smith to Lee High School. Mr. Crawford's grandon's mother is active duty in the military and Mr. Crawford needs assistance with transportation. This is absolutely wrong not having transportation.
Ms. Michelle Giraldo, student at Lee High School, can't always get to school when her mother is sick. She misses school because of no bus transportation.
Ms. Maria Giraldo, mother of Michelle, drives 40 miles each day to get her children to school but is ill quite frequently and then they miss school. Ms. Giraldo pays $90.00 per week for gasoline...please help us with bus transportation.
Ms. Tami Moe said that we need transportation for Lee High School. Ms. Moe's son is in the 8th grade and would like to see him continue in the Math and Science magnet program. We were told we would have transportation...please help us.
Mr. Scot Rippy spoke about transporation at Lee High School. This was his children's first year in Duval County; has a son in 8th grade that wants to continue in the Math and Science magnet program. Please resolve this problem.
Ms. Cynthia Benjamin has a son attending Darnell Cookman and was planning on going to Stanton but has been accepted into Paxon. We'd like to go to Stanton since he could get there in a more timely manner. Is there anything that can be done about this...swapping spaces?
Ms. Teresine Penatzy spoke about transportation to Lee High School.
Ms. Connie McDonald has taught at Kirby Smith Middle School for 32 years and this has been the best of her teaching career. We have the support of 32 teachers regarding our magnet program...Science and Technology. We need the same access to the magnet high school as James Weldon Johnson and Darnell Cookman have...please allow us to retain a gifted program.
Ms. Lauri Owens, counselor at Kirby Smith Middle School, is very excited about working at Lee High School next year. Kirby Smith is the only magnet middle school that does not have a designated high school. Please give us the same opportunity.
Ms. Angela Wittwer, counselor intern at Kirby Smith Middle School, stated that students achieve at every level at this school and will continue to flourish if allowed, with transportation, to continue at Lee High School.
Speaker:
Ms. Kris Barnes, Board Chairman
Mr. Andy Johnson commented that the school district's website does not include email addresses for the Superintendent, Board members and staff...this is arrogant and wrong. There were no staff members who could talk with him today. Something needs to be done about this.
Mr. Mike Bell commented that he was not here tonight to complain; funding is down, our legislators are "wrangling" and we don't know what our budget will be next year. Alimacani Elementary is an "A" school and is a model school. Next year, our budget will be approximately $257,000 lower...parents need to ask questions and talk with your principal and everyone else. We will have to slash the programs due to the budget - no art, only half the must. Mr. Bell is here to spread the word.
Speakers:
Ms. Martha Barrett, Board Member
Mr. John C. Fryer, Jr., Superintendent of Schools
Ms. Cindy Funkhouser, parent of a student at Alimacani Elementary, stated that due to the budget, Alimacani is losing their art and music programs. These along with physical education are vital to a well rounded education. As parents, we are outraged that we must beg for funds and we realize this problem lies in Tallahassee.
Speakers:
Ms. Martha Barrett, Board Member
Ms. Vicki Drake, Board Member
Ms. Cindy Rounds, Board Member
Mr. Bill Gassett, Smaller Learning Communities grant - looking for a pilot program in the high schools. This is an uphill climb at the high school level - perhaps, middle school would be better. Regarding the financial issue, look deeper. The millage has been cut even more over the last two years. Certain counties receive more money; form a legal group and look at the law.
Speaker:
Mr. John C. Fryer, Jr., Superintendent of Schools
Comments from Parent Organizations
- COMMENTS FROM PARENT ORGANIZATIONS
Minutes: Ms. Tracy Scott, PTA president, said that it was important for parents to contact their legislators; Spring Leadership was last week and we are looking forward to a wonderful year next school year.
Ms. Barnes, Chairman, said that the entire Board and the Superintendent will be out of town for Master Board training next week and will miss the Principals and Presidents Luncheon - we would love to be there with you!
Ms. Rachel Raneri, representing District Advisory Council and School Advisory Council, mentioned that the next DAC meeting will be Monday, May 12, 2003, 6:30 p.m. in the 6th floor conference room. Our guest speakers will be Deborah Hansen, Character Counts Education Act; Dr. Roy Mitchell for Project Reach and we will be discussing the training for the fall.
Comments from Employee Organizations
- COMMENTS FROM EMPLOYEE ORGANIZATIONS
Minutes: Ms. Terrie Brady, Duval Teachers United president, spoke about the Leadership Selection, Starting Time, ESEA Para/Pro - paras will succeed when taking the test - failure is not acceptable in this program; School Starting Time (Dr. Mark Tomaski will do a brief update tonight); leadership and key elements with people skills; build academic teams; sensitive to leaving "No Child Left Behind" in this school district as no child deserves to fail; there is a complex makeup in this community; tolerant of diversity of students and staffs; we want everyone to succeed. Legislative Session - go to Tallahassee next week and see those legislators in person!
