ART NEWS

The Importance of Art

Art is one of the first forms of communication for children. Art is a vehicle for children to learn about the world around them and to organize the information in a comprehensive format. Visual cognition is a powerful way for children to process information and is the basis for learning in and through art.

The study and production of artwork enhances learning in all areas of
the curriculum. When students connect art to their other subjects, learning occurs in the natural and interrelated way that it exists in the real world. We know from experience that learning is most meaningful when it is interconnected - not isolated.

Our school art program’s purpose and goals is based on the
Sunshine State Standards where:

• Students understand and apply various media, techniques and processes.
• Students create and communicate a range of subject matter symbols and ideas using knowledge of visual arts.
• Students will have opportunities to assess and respond to the characteristics of works of art.
• Children will make connections between visual arts and the real world.

Program Participation

• Alimacani Elementary School joyfully participates every year in the "Empty Bowls" program sponsored by Second Harvest Food Bank at Lutheran Social Services. Students create ceramic bowls which are sold at the Empty Bowls Luncheon to raise funds to feed low income individuals in the Jacksonville community.

• Our school participates in the Duval County Elementary Library Show every year.  Over the past 5 years several student entries have been selected for "The Best of Elementary Show" presented at FCCJ Kent Campus

This year Alimacani has one full time art teacher and one part time teacher.

Emphasis is based on exploration and implementation of all techniques of 2D and 3D design, self expression, and individual motivation to increase self awareness and creativity .
