Discovery Channel - Parent's Guide Helpful educational advice and study tools

BrainPOP Jr. provides educational movies and homework help for K-3 students. Each animated movie has quizzes, games, vocabulary, and activities for kids. BrainPOP Jr. is a great resource for teachers and homeschools, offering lesson plans and lesson ideas that develop critical thinking and inquiry skills.

Homework Helper

It’s the sentence most parent’s dread: “Can you explain this to me?” Now parents and students have extra assistance available in their home to make sure they understand a subject.

Live Homework Help, a partnership between Duval County Public Schools and the Jacksonville Public Library system, offers free online assistance to students in grades 4-12 in math, social studies, science and English.

Students just type in their questions and one of the many specially trained teachers from all over the country will respond.  The teachers dispense homework help and assistance seven days a week from 2 p.m. to midnight.  Spanish speaking students and parents can also get help Sunday through Thursday 2 p.m. to midnight.

“This is an easy way for students to contact tutors from the comfort of their own home,” said Keith Hayes, senior Librarian of the Children’s Department in the Main Library.

The teachers are interactive with the students, communicating back and forth during the session.  They have a paint board where they can draw out solutions to problems beyond plain text and they can also recommend web sites for additional reference. 

What they won’t do, however, is supply the answer.  “The tutors don’t spoon-feed the information to the students, but they enable the students to find the answers themselves,” says Hayes.
