Alden Road
Exceptional Student Center
Alden
Road Exceptional Student Center was built in 1975 as a school to
serve students who had moderate mental handicaps and were in grades
K-12. Alden Road School presently serves 180 students in grades 6 –
12. The entire student population is composed of students who are in
full-time exceptional student education (ESE) programs; the students
are assigned to the school by the district ESE department. Students
are assigned to Alden Road School when it is determined that the
most appropriate setting to meet their educational needs is an ESE
Center School environment, as compared to a comprehensive school
setting, and/or when ESE vocational training is determined to be a
priority in their individual education plan. Alden Road School is
one of three ESE center schools in the district; therefore, students
who attend come from a very wide and varied geographical region.
The
school serves students who have a wide range of disabilities. Additionally, the following ESE
support services are provided: orientation and mobility instruction,
physical therapy, occupational therapy, vision instruction, speech
and language therapy, sign language interpreting, school social
worker, and a two behavioral specialists.
Since
the 2001-2002 school year a multiple curricular delivery model has
been in place. This model is designed to address individual student
needs and provide a hierarchical system for students to transition
from a self-contained learning environment to a transitional
vocational wheel and on to school based vocational training. As
students demonstrate competence in functional academic and
vocational pre-requisite skills a Community Based Instruction (CBI)
program is available to assist them in transitioning into the adult,
competitive work environment.
Students are assessed each year with both formal and informal
procedures. Formal assessments using the Brigance Diagnostic
Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills and the Florida Alternate
Assessment are conducted to obtain baseline and performance progress
data. Additionally, teachers maintain Student Portfolios which
contain individually developed task data tracking systems and copies
of student progress reports. Student TIEP Protocol Progress
Reports, containing a summarization of each student’s TIEP goals and
objectives, are used to track and document student progress. At the
mid-term and end of each grading period teachers provide input,
based on a school-wide rubric, regarding progress students are
making toward achieving TIEP goals and objectives. Homeroom teachers
average the performance ratings and send the parents a Progress
Report. At the end of the year the total TIEP goals mastered by all
students is recorded and tracked.
To
monitor student progress toward achievement of the Access Points of
the Sunshine State Standards for Special Diploma (SSSD) data from
the Alternative Assessment is submitted to the Florida Department of
Education (FDOE) who returns a summative report to the school
summarizing student scores.
Community involvement is promoted extensively through our community
based instruction (CBI) which includes opportunities for students at
all functioning levels. Students requiring self-contained or
transitional classes are provided field experiences to local
retail and grocery stores, students in vocational training are
employed at area businesses. Throughout the year members of the
community representing music, storytelling, Ronald McDonald Show,
local colleges and universities, programs
for adults with disabilities , and civic organizations provide
lessons in individual classrooms and conduct performances for
school-wide assemblies. Students from other schools volunteer to
assist at several events each year and perform at Alden Road.
Students participate in community based Special Olympics events each
year. Parents are provided valuable information related to adult
housing, adult employment, and legal questions through presentations
at PTA meetings by specialists invited from the community.
