I grew up in Lake City, Florida and lived there until I was in my mid-teens. At that point, in 1976, my family moved to Orlando, Florida where my father developed a hotel on the outskirts of Disney World. I graduated from West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Florida. My husband and I have been married 23 years and have 4 beautiful children. Although I never considered becoming a teacher, I felt that I was led to this profession through my experiences with my own children. My oldest daughter, Aubri, was born 14 weeks prematurely and has cerebral palsy as a result of her preterm birth. My second child, Joseph, suffered from autistic-like symptoms until he was 5 years old and we discovered that he had a large subarachnoid cyst compressing his left temporal lobe. Both of my older children had a difficult time fitting in with the educational system of the day. At that point, I decided to home school. Met with the challenge of educating my 7 year old, 5 year old, and balancing preschool activities with my two younger children (then 3 and 2 years old), I had much to learn about education, quickly! I learned what has become the essence of my philosophy as a teacher: every child can learn. All four of my children entered public school education four years after I began to home school and met with academic success. I began to substitute in Duval County Public schools in 2001 which rapidly became a full-time job. I was indoctrinated into the America’s Choice Workshop model through several long-term substitute experiences. It is a great honor to be counted among the faculty of Chets Creek Elementary.
