Battle of the Books
2010-2011

What is Battle of the Books?

Battle of the Books is a reading competition for third, fourth, and fifth grade students at Chets Creek Elementary. To participate in the competition students read books from the Battle of the Books List (see below). The fifteen titles used in this competition are the Sunshine State Young Readers' Award nominees for this year. Battle of the Books culminates in three "battles" where teams buzz in to answer questions about the books. Battle winners receive gold medals and a pizza party for their class!

How do I know if my child is eligible to participate in Battle of the Books?

Any student that reads 3 or more Battle books is eligible to take the Battle of the Books qualifying test in March of 2011. The top four scorers from each homeroom will get to compete in the third annual Battle of the Books! Last year over 300 students competed for the 92 team positions available!

Why should my child participate in Battle of the Books?

The purpose of Battle of the Books is to motivate students to read, monitor their own comprehension, and become active participants in book discussions. Battle of the Books encourages students to read quality literature on a variety of topics and themes. The books are written at different reading levels that will both challenge and entertain students. We have designed this competition to promote the important character education goals of teamwork, respect, and good sportsmanship. Battle of the Books is a fun way for students to work towards the Million Word Campaign goal!
