Kelley and McBride 5th Grade Highlights We’re working toward our trip to Washington D.C. We are still searching for fund raising ideas to help with our trip. We will be selling cookie dough this month. We will need a down payment for the students and adults that are going on the trip. More information will follow soon. Reading and Writing Highlights: In reading, we are working on the theme Nature’s Fury, which talks about earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and volcanoes. Our focus strategies that we are working on are predict/infer, monitor/clarify, and questioning. We are also working on sequence of events, text organization, and categorizing and classifying. In writing, we are writing narratives. In language arts, we’re working on kinds of sentences, subjects and predicates, and singular & plural nouns. Please sign Agenda DAILY. Students should be reading at home for at least 20 minutes daily. They should keep a record of what they’re reading in their agenda or book log. Mathematics We are finishing “Building on Numbers You Know”. We will start “Name That Portion” (fraction, percents, and decimals) at the end of the 1st full week of October. We have been working on fractions, percents, and decimals in our Calendar Math. We will continue these skills in Calendar Math while we begin to work with polygons for the month of October. Science We have just finished the unit on matter and we will begin energy this week. Social Studies Students have selected a President to research and make a presentation. We are working on this topic in school and a date for the final product will be given later. We are also working on our Constitution and the process of electing our President. We are having a Terrific Time Learning J
