Welcome to First Grade! First Grade News There is a lot of hard work and learning going on in the first grade. In reading, we are learning many new strategies and skills to help us to become more proficient readers. We are working towards Reading Standard 2, which is getting the meaning of what we read. Each week, we learn a different skill and strategy to help us to understand what we are reading. We are also learning new sight words every week to help us in our reading. In Writers Workshop, we are working daily to meet Writing Standard 2, which is writing for a purpose. Currently we are working on a narrative genre study, and we are learning to write stories based upon experiences in our everyday life. In Math Investigations we are building number sense. We are working to meet the standard of using addition and subtraction strategies for basic addition and subtraction problems. This month in science we are learning about properties of matter. We are working toward being able to sort objects by observable properties, such as size, shape, color, temperature (hot or cold), weight (heavy or light), texture, and whether objects sink of float. In social studies, we are studying the different people and aspects of the community we live in. As you can see, there is a lot of fun and exciting learning happening in first grade, and we are all working hard to do our very best!! |
