STANDARDS FOR LEARNING

The School Standards Coach at Central Riverside Elementary, has responsibilities that include staff development on the implementation of standards based instruction. Instruction is delivered using the 60 minute workshop model. The teaching is broken down into three areas: mini-lesson, student work time, and closure. During the 10-15 minute mini-lesson, the teacher introduces the standard element (what the students are expected to accomplish) and strategy for the students to accomplish using charting, authentic literature, and class discussions. The students have 35-45 minutes of independent work time. In this session, the students apply the strategy either independently or as a group. While the students are working, the teacher holds student conferences, makes observations, or works with a small group of students. Once the independent time is completed, the students gather back together for the lesson’s closure (5-10 minutes).

The Standards Coach also helps oversee the 25 book or million word campaign where every student and employee is encouraged to read 25 books each school year. Last year students were challenged to meet their reading goals and were rewarded with changing the Principal into Marshmallow Woman and she dyed her hair when the 10,000 school wide books goal was met.

Purpose:

  • To increase love of reading

  • Students read at independent level

  • Students select books based on interest

  • Students foster the habits of good readers

  • To read one million words at each grade level (each student)

Why one million words?

  • Children learn to read by reading!

  • The more words read, the more opportunities to learn vocabulary

  • Vocabulary knowledge leads to reading comprehension

The program continues …

  • All students read 25 books (Standards-based)

  • Students display responses to the literature they read in ELA classrooms on 25 Books Walls (at least 5 books during the year)

  • ELA teachers will record and report monthly tallies for all students.

Students will receive recognition for reaching the benchmark of having read 25 books.
