Get to Know Mrs. Woodlief! I have been teaching art in elementary schools in Duval County in since 1977 - that’s 32 years! Teaching young children how to work with various art materials, techniques and processes has been a very fulfilling career. Professional development is very important to me and has kept me up to date with current trends in education, particularly those in the arts. I currently serve as President of the Duval Art Teachers Association and have a membership in the Florida Art Education Association where I have been able to meet and work with some of the best art educators in the state and have continued to grow in my profession. I am currently serving as President of Alpha Delta Kappa, Beta Psi, an international honorary organization for women educators dedicated to educational excellence, altruism and world understanding. Philosophy: I believe in making art fun without compromising the content of the lesson. I have known so many adults, who, after learning of my profession, sheepishly tell me they “never liked art” due to a bad experience in art class. It is my goal that every child at Chaffee Trail leaves my room with a feeling of success. To accomplish this I create art lessons that are age appropriate, content rich, hands-on and logically sequenced. Each lesson is aligned with Florida Sunshine State Standards for Visual Arts and grade level expectations. Much of my instruction supports subjects already taught by the classroom teacher and meets math, science, social studies and reading standards. This allows my lessons to be more relevant allowing students to make connections to prior background knowledge. I believe that students should have the opportunity for their accomplishments to be showcased. What better way to raise self esteem and provide an opportunity for encouragement from others. Each year we will repeat our annual art exhibit, an event fundraiser to show off our work and raise funds to enhance the art program at Chaffee Trail. Art is for everyone. All students are able to learn, contribute and create! Today I will lead my art students, give their right brains a workout and help them become the creative thinkers who will be our leaders of tomorrow.
