Counselors
coordinate and conduct evaluations of individual students to identify
programs to better serve their academic needs. The primary focus is
directed toward assisting those students who exhibit problems traceable
to social, emotional, physical, and developmental conditions which
impede the learning process. Counselors and the Student Services
Department recognize that each child is unique in growth patterns,
ability, and learning styles, these services attempt to meet the varied
needs through assessment and appraisal, remedial interventions, home
visits, screenings, follow-up, and referral.
Classroom guidance lessons help
students understand themselves and others and to be safe in our world.
Through classroom guidance students develop peer relationships;
effective social, decision-making, and study skills; effective
communications, conflict resolution, and coping strategies; and more.
Career counseling helps students set goals, establish academic and
career plans, understand their own strengths and weaknesses, and prepare
for the transition to the next stage of their life. Responsive services
assist students with particular needs such as adjusting to a new school,
coping with grief, and dealing with changing family structures, and
other at-risk behaviors. System support enhances school climate and
relationships among members of the school community.
School counselors coordinate parent outreach services, community support
services, and consultations with other faculty and staff. As each
student at Chimney Lakes Elementary is unique, our school counselors
work hard to provide services or referrals to community agencies to meet
their needs.
