Duval County Public Schools The Speech and Language Impaired program provides students with functional communication skills which are essential to their academic, social and economic success. The program is designed to improve these skills as appropriate for developmental level. ELIGIBILITY
INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM All students in grades K, 1, and 7 are screened for hearing disorders by School Health Services. Students in other grades may be referred for screening. A parent, teacher, other professional or the student may make a referral at any time. Those students identified as possibly needing speech, hearing and/or language programs receive a comprehensive evaluation by a speech-language pathologist. The pathologist then meets with a special committee in the school to determine if the student is eligible for the program and if so, how the student's needs can best be met. An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed to act as a guide. The Speech and Language Impaired program includes therapy sessions, as well as consultations with parents and classroom teachers. Students walk in a small group setting with therapy time dependent upon the severity of the disorder. CURRICULUM Based on the individual student's disorder and needs, there are a variety of specialized methods and materials which may be utilized with the speech and language impaired student. PROGRAM GOALS The goal of the program is to improve students' functional communication skills as appropriate for developmental level. |
