 To Crown Point Rituals & Routines

ARRIVAL OF STUDENTS

Car riders and walkers should arrive at school no earlier than 8:00 a.m. as there is no adult supervision. The only students allowed in the building before 8:00 a.m. are those enrolled in Extended Day. Upon entering the building, students should report directly to the cafeteria for breakfast or their designated waiting area. Kindergarten, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students sit in the hallways outside their classrooms. First and 2nd grade students sit by class in the multipurpose room. Students should bring a book to read while waiting until the first bell rings at 8:25 a.m.

Articles Prohibited in School

Toys and items that resemble weapons (i.e., guns, water pistols, sling shots, hard balls), roller shoes or heelies, roller blades, rolling backpacks, scooters and skateboards present a safety problem and interfere with school procedures. If such items are brought to school, they will be taken from the student. (Exceptions are made for rolling backpacks if a doctor’s note is provided to the school.) The Student Code of Conduct will be enforced on this issue.

Attendance POLICY

Regular and prompt attendance is a must for academic achievement. State and school board policies state that illness, accident, death in the family and extreme inclement weather conditions are the only reasons for excused absences. When returning to school after an absence, THE STUDENT IS TO PRESENT A WRITTEN, DATED EXCUSE FROM THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN EXPLAINING HIS/HER ABSENCE. If a note is not received, the absence is considered unexcused. Excessive absences (excused or unexcused) may be referred to the district attendance counselors and further may be referred to the State Attorney’s Office. See sections for EARLY CHECK OUT and TARDY POLICY.

BUILDING ACCESS AND SECURITY

Crown Point Elementary welcomes all visitors to our school. The safety of our students is always a top priority. While no major incidents have occurred, the possibility is always there. For the safety of our students, the atrium doors are locked at all times and the doors on the west side of the building coming in from the Arrowhead Loop are locked from 8:30 a.m.-2:45 p.m. Visitors must ring the bell, enter through the main entrance during the school day and receive a visitor’s sticker from the main office staff before entering the hallways of the school. These procedures are not to make things difficult for our guests, but to help us provide a secure environment for our children. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Business Partners

Local businesses can support our school in many ways, including donation of volunteer mentoring hours and incentive awards for our students. We are always anxious to acquire additional business partners. If you have suggestions, please inform someone in the office or a member of our School Advisory Council.

BUS RIDERS

Students living more than 2 miles from the school are eligible to ride the school bus. Buses load and unload using the driveway to the east of the school. Therefore, no cars may use this entrance. Bus schedules will be distributed to all students transported by bus and are available in the main office. Bus students are expected to ride to and from school daily. They are to be at the stop 10 minutes before the scheduled pick-up time. Children may not change their bus assignment without prior written approval from their parents and the principal or designee. It is recommended that an adult meet kindergarten students and/or any student who is the only one at a bus stop. Bus drivers will not release students if they feel the situation is unsafe. Bus transportation is a privilege which may be suspended or revoked if students refuse to obey the rules. Please refer to the Duval County Student Code of Conduct for specific offenses and possible consequences.

Cafeteria

The cafeteria is a vital part of our school. A well-balanced breakfast and lunch are offered at a reasonable price. Parents are welcome to have lunch with their child at any time. Please be sure to get your visitor’s sticker in the main office and sit with your child at the tables designated for guests. Classmates must remain at their assigned tables.

All students are expected to display acceptable cafeteria behavior and table manners. Our cafeteria plan is designed to recognize and reinforce appropriate behaviors. We expect everyone’s cooperation in:

  1. Going through the serving lines in a quiet, orderly manner;
  2. Eating silently while the red cup is on their table;
  3. Talking quietly while the green cup is on their table;
  4. Using appropriate table manners;
  5. Treating all employees and volunteers with respect;
  6. Walking, not running, to their tables;
  7. Depositing all litter and garbage in appropriate containers;
  8. Leaving the tables and floor around their space in a clean condition for others; and
  9. Waiting quietly for their teacher in the cafeteria.

Each child is responsible for his/her own lunch money. The school cannot loan money to students for meals as per school board policy.

Parents are encouraged to place money into their child’s cafeteria account on-line at mylunchmoney.com or in the cafeteria any morning before school begins. If money is sent to school to be deposited, it should be placed in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and the teacher’s name written on the outside. We recommend that you send a check rather than cash. Checks should be made payable to the school. Money is deducted from the account as your child makes purchases. Parents are encouraged to place extra funds in their child’s account, even if your child usually brings their own lunch or pays on a daily basis. This will ensure that your child receives a complete lunch in the event they forget their lunch or lose their money.

The school participates in the federal breakfast and lunch program. Students who qualify may receive free or reduced price meals. Food Service information along with prices can be found at:  http://www.duvalschools.org/static/students/lunch/

Please clearly mark lunch boxes with your child’s name. Food cannot be taken out of the cafeteria. We ask parents not to send soft drinks, candy or gum with a child’s lunch. For safety reasons, neither glass bottles nor pop-top cans are to be sent in a child’s lunch.

CAR RIDERS

Parents driving in from the direction of San Jose Blvd are requested to use the Arrowhead Car Rider Loop on the west side of the school. Those driving in from the direction of Old St. Augustine Road should use the Crown Point Car Rider Loop in the front of the school. Parents coming through the car rider loops should pull forward as far as possible in the designated lane while waiting for their children). Please do not park, get out of your car and walk through the traffic to pick up your child. With both parent loops fully operational, we are able to get the children to their respective cars quickly and safely. Please use the same parent loop for drop off and pick up to avoid confusion.

Change of address/phone number

If you are moving, please give your new address and telephone number to the secretary in the main office. This also includes your work or business location and telephone number. It is imperative that the correct information is always on file in the office so we can contact you in case of an emergency.

CODE OF CONDUCT/DISCIPLINE PLAN

Students are expected to behave in a manner that is conducive to supporting an optimum learning environment for all students. No student has the right to deprive another of the opportunity to learn. At all times, each student is expected to show respect for teachers, school personnel and fellow classmates.

Students who do not conduct themselves in the proper manner at school will be disciplined in accordance with the Duval County Code of Student Conduct. A copy of the county code and our school wide Discipline Plan will be provided for every student and will be discussed at the beginning of the school year. Parents and students are expected to sign an acknowledgement form verifying receipt of the Code of Student Conduct.

Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences are encouraged for the purpose of giving each person a better understanding of the child’s needs. Conferences may not be conducted during instructional time. Therefore, please send a written request or call your child’s teacher (260-5808) to schedule a conference. Conferences are normally scheduled before or after the school day.

Conferences with a guidance counselor or an administrator may be scheduled at anytime; however, if the conference concerns a student’s work/progress or the teacher, a conference with the teacher must take place first.

DISMISSAL OF STUDENTS

Students begin gathering in their respective areas at approximately 2:40 p.m. Staff members are assigned duty stations and children are escorted, by grade level, to their departure points. The staff members remain with the students in their assigned area until all children have been dismissed. Bus students and daycare van riders are escorted to the multipurpose room where they sit in grade level rows until their bus number or van is announced. They are also escorted from the multipurpose room to the bus loading area.

Car riders are escorted to either the atrium for the Crown Point Loop or the third grade hallway for the Arrowhead Loop. Walkie talkies are used to relay the names of the students when their cars arrive, so afternoon pick up runs efficiently. It is imperative that your child knows which car rider loop to use.

Students who participate in our Extended Day Program are escorted to the cafeteria where the Extended Day staff is waiting to greet them.

Walkers and Parent Pick Up students are escorted to the foyer area and are dismissed beginning at 3:00 p.m. Walking students are encouraged to walk with a friend to and from school. For safety reasons, no students are allowed to ride bicycles. Parent Pick Up students are released by the staff on duty and meet their parents outside the front entrance of the school. Parent Pick Up is for a parent who does not wish to go through the car rider line and is choosing to park and walk up to the front of the building to meet their children).

Dress Code

Student behavior is influenced by proper dress and grooming. Guidelines have been developed to aid parents and students in selecting proper attire and are described in the Duval County Student Code of Conduct. Tank tops, midriff shirts, low-rider pants and backless shoes are not allowed. Special costumes may be worn only when it is part of a school activity and is recommended by a teacher or activity sponsor. If a staff member finds a student’s clothing or jewelry to be distracting, unsafe or not healthy for the students, the student may be sent to the office to contact a parent; and the distracting items will be held for parents in the main office.

EARLY CHECK OUT OF STUDENTS

No child is permitted to leave the school grounds after arriving at school. A parent who wishes to pick up a child during school hours must come to the main office and give a reason for the early check out in the Student Sign-Out book. The parent or other authorized party must be listed on the student information card in order to sign the student out of school. A photo ID is required. An office staff member will call for the student. For the protection of all students, parents are not to go to the classroom to pick up a student, but are to wait in the office. Teachers are not allowed to release students to anyone who appears at the classroom door.

As per Board Policy:

bulletStudents may not be released within the last 45 minutes of the school day;
bulletStudents will not be recognized for perfect attendance when they have three (3) or more unexcused early check outs;
bulletA mandatory parent conference with the guidance counselor or principal occurs after three (3) early check outs or three (3) tardies in a thirty (30) day period;
bulletA referral to the Attendance Intervention Team occurs after six (6) unexcused early check outs or six (6) tardies in any forty-five (45) day grading period; and
bulletParents causing chronic tardiness or early check outs without an acceptable excuse will be referred to the State Attorney’s Office for violation of 1003.21 F.S. (compulsory attendance).

EXTENDED DAY

The Extended Day Program operates only on days school is in session for students. There is a morning session from 7:00-8:15 a.m. and an afternoon session from 3:00-6:00 p.m. To be eligible for enrollment in the Extended Day Program, a child must be enrolled as a regular student at the school and the parent must be employed. For more information, call the Extended Day office after 3:00 p.m.

Fees must be paid in advance every month. A late fee will be charged for late payments and for any child not picked up by 6:00 p.m. A schedule of payment due dates will be provided at the time of registration.

Field Trips

Field trips provide valuable educational experiences. Before a student is permitted to go on a field trip, he/she must have a field trip permission form SIGNED by his/her parent or guardian. This form is sent home by the school for a signature. Money and permission slips must be submitted to the school by the due date listed on the permission slip. PERMISSION CANNOT BE GRANTED OVER THE PHONE NOR BE HANDWRITTEN. Parents may be asked to chaperone authorized field trips. Children who do not attend our school will not be allowed to accompany a chaperone on field trips. Chaperones have a very special responsibility in providing this service. A child must be in attendance at school in order to participate in field trip activities. Students must ride on the authorized transportation. Parents driving their own vehicles may not transport their own children to the activities. If arrangements are made in advance with the teacher, a child may be checked out at the conclusion of the activities. The parent then assumes full responsibility for his/her child. No student will be allowed to leave with another student or parent. Students who have been disruptive at school or who have had difficulty in following school rules may be required to have an adult family member attend the field trip with the child.

GUIDANCE

Guidance services are provided by our school counselors. Their primary function is to assist students with their educational and personal development. This is carried out through classroom programs, individual and small group counseling with students, conferences with parents and teachers, individual educational testing, and working with the TARGETeam and Multidisciplinary Referral Team.

Health/Illnesses or Accidents at School

Pupils should remain home for a minimum of twenty-four hours following a fever or nausea. A child who suddenly develops a headache, chill, fever, vomiting or other signs of illness should be kept at home.

When a student has become ill or has an accident at school, the teacher will direct the child to the office. An office staff member will make the student as comfortable as possible. If deemed appropriate, a parent will be called. The school clinic is not permitted, nor does it have adequate facilities or staff, to care for a sick child for a prolonged period of time.

The school clinic is limited in the amount of first-aid treatment that can be given and is prohibited from giving any internal medicine (including aspirin). It is important that we have an emergency phone number for every student. Please instruct your child to report any injury to his/her teacher as soon as possible.

Medicine at school: In the event that any child is to take prescribed medicine during the day, the parent must do the following:

  1. Have a copy of directions for administering the medicine from a licensed doctor or dentist attached to the original container.
  2. Sign a medication liability release form and have it filed in the office.
  3. Have the medicine (original prescription bottle only) placed in the office so that it may be administered by office personnel.

Diseases: If your child has one of the listed communicable diseases, he/she must remain at home until after treatment from your doctor or clinic and a release is given: Chicken Pox, Hepatitis, Measles, Mumps, Pinkeye, Ringworm of the scalp or skin, Rubella, Scarlet Fever and Whooping Cough.

Head Lice: Do not be overly alarmed, but be concerned. Any child with head lice or nits may not attend school. We will do the following:

  1. When a child is found to have head lice or nits, the parent must come to get the child immediately. After the first treatment, a second treatment is required seven (7) days later and the verification of treatment and hair check must be done. THE CHILD WILL BE ALLOWED TO RETURN TO SCHOOL WHEN ALL NITS HAVE BEEN REMOVED AND THE CHILD’S HAIR HAS BEEN CHECKED BY A DESIGNATED EMPLOYEE IN THE OFFICE.
  2. All children in the class may be checked and a letter will be sent home to inform parents of how to detect head lice and its treatment.
  3. All children who had lice/nits will be examined upon re-entering school. They must bring a label from the shampoo used as proof of treatment and all nits must be removed.

Health Conditions: Asthma and severe allergies are types of health conditions that should be documented annually with your child’s teacher and the cafeteria manager.

Homework

Homework is an important part of your child’s educational experience. All students are expected to READ every night. Please check with your child each day to determine the homework that has been assigned. Check your child’s planner daily as homework, projects, special events and/or notes from the teacher are recorded in it. By county guidelines, the assignment and amount of homework will vary from class to class. In general, homework will be assigned each school day, except Friday. Completing the homework and returning it at the assigned time is part of the learning process and is the responsibility of the student. Homework completion is checked and is an important factor in reinforcing skills and learning.

IDENTIFICATION BADGES FOR STUDENTS

Each student will be issued a complimentary photo ID at the beginning of the year. The ID Badges will have the student’s grade level, teacher’s name, personalized bar code for use in the cafeteria and media center, and mode of transportation. Students will be required to wear their ID badges at specified times during the school day. The cost for a replacement badge is $5.00. ID badges are not sent home.

Immunization

Florida law [Florida Statues 232.032(8) (1)] requires that all students show proof of immunization before admission to school. Any students who fail to show proof of immunization will be excluded from school until such proof or exemption is presented to the school.

Insurance

Student accident insurance may be purchased early in the school year. Information will be provided through the school office. The school has no part in the transaction; the money collection is handled by the insurance company. This is an accommodation for parents who might desire to take advantage of low cost insurance.

INTERNET USE

Each classroom has internet accessibility. Parents must give permission for their students to use the internet at school. A permission form is provided in the Student Code of Conduct.

LOST AND FOUND

All lost and found articles should be placed in the designated lost and found area. Students’ belongings should be labeled in order to facilitate the return of each article to its rightful owner. Several times a year, unclaimed articles will be donated to charity.

NEWSLETTERS

Communication between the school and home is essential. To keep every parent informed of school events and other important information, a monthly school-wide newsletter will be sent home. The newsletter is also posted on the school’s website at www.duvalschools.org/crownpoint.

OPEN HOUSE/PARENT MEETING

Open House will be held shortly after school begins. We welcome all parents, relatives and visitors to come to our school and encourage them to meet our faculty and staff to learn more about the school’s educational programs. Open House dates will be publicized.

PARKING

Parking for visitors is provided in the main parking lot in front of the school. The parking spaces on the west side of the school in the Arrowhead loop may only be used during arrival and dismissal as the access gate will be locked from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. each day. If you need to be in the school for an extended period of time, please use the main parking lot in front of the school.

PARENT/TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA)

All parents and interested individuals are encouraged to join the PTA, attend PTA meetings and participate in PTA-related activities. Membership dues are a donation that assist in providing special programs and activities, as well as, doing extra things for our school. Your membership counts!

PETS

For the safety of our students, no animals will be brought to school unless a school board administrator has granted permission. Pets are not allowed on school buses. Do not allow your pets to follow children to school.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/RECESS

All students are expected to participate fully in 150 minutes of physical education activities weekly, whether the students are with the classroom teacher or the physical education teacher. Appropriate shoes and clothing enhance both the students’ safety and participation.

If a child has a temporary illness or injury that will limit or prohibit a child’s participation, a written note from the parent must be sent to the teacher. Verbal messages from students cannot be accepted. Extended limitations require a written note from a doctor.

PLANNERS

Students in grades K-5 are given a planner at the beginning of each school year. Parents should review and sign the planner daily. The planner is an excellent tool to facilitate communication between school and home. The cost of a replacement planner is $3.00.

PROGRESS MONITORING Plan (PMP)

A review of the previous year’s test scores, final grades and/or teacher recommendations may indicate that a student needs remediation during the school year in reading, writing, math or science. Teachers and parents collaborate to create a Progress Monitoring Plan (PMP) to address specific areas of need.

PROMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR BASIC EDUCATION

  1. Kindergarten – Grade 1: Promotion is based on teacher judgment that the student has met Sunshine State Standards/New Performance Standards in communication and mathematics as indicated by a final grade of S or better.
  2. Grade 2: Promotion is based on teacher judgment that the student has met Sunshine State Standards/New Performance Standards in reading and mathematics as indicated by a final grade of D or above.
  3. Grade 3: Promotion is based on the following:

    2. a grade of D or above in either language arts or social studies.

If a student is in danger of not meeting promotional requirements, this will be indicated on the report card each nine weeks. The parent should schedule a conference with the teacher(s) immediately.

RAINY OR COLD WEATHER DAYS

Families should establish a "rainy day" procedure so children know automatically what to do in the event of bad weather. Our phone system cannot accommodate all of the extra calls on bad weather days and a great deal of confusion can be avoided if a plan is made in advance.

RECORDS AND TRANSFERS

Student records are available for review at any time by appointment. If your child is transferring to another school, be sure to inform the main office as soon as possible. Crown Point will send your child’s records to the new school upon receiving the school’s request.

REPORT OF STUDENT PROGRESS

Report cards are issued every nine weeks. The Acknowledgement Strip should be signed by the parent and returned to the homeroom teacher within three days to indicate that it has been received. This does not mean that the parent approves or disapproves of the report. If a report card is lost, this should be reported by a note from the parent to the office. A duplicate card will be sent home for signing.

Scholarship Warnings indicate that a child is in danger of failing a subject or is having severe difficulty in a particular area. Upon receiving this report, the parent should investigate the problem(s) their child is experiencing. THE SCHOLARSHIP WARNING MUST BE SIGNED AND RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL WITHIN THREE (3) DAYS, TO INDICATE THAT IT HAS BEEN RECEIVED.

Mid-quarter Progress Reports may be sent home approximately half-way through each grading period. Progress Reports indicate how well a student is meeting the standards and are distributed with ample time for remediation and improvement to occur. Progress Reports should be signed and returned to the school.

SAFETY AND SAFETY PATROLS

Show your child the safest route to school and/or the bus stop. Students are to cross roads at intersections or crosswalks only. The safety patrol students perform a valuable service for our school by assisting students. Respect for these boys and girls while they are on duty is expected from all students and adults. Parents are asked to follow directions given by safety patrols and staff while at school.

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL (SAC)

Our School Advisory Council (SAC) is made up of parents, staff, business people and citizens of the community. It meets at least five times a year and plays an active role in the development of educational priorities, assessment of our school’s needs and identification of local resources. Continued school improvement is a key issue addressed by SAC. Members are recruited annually.

SCHOOL PARTIES

School Board Policy states TWO PARTIES PER YEAR may be held during school hours. Providing special birthday/holiday treats should be arranged in advance with the teacher. Personal parties are not permitted.

SMOKING

All Duval County Public School property is smoke-free. Smoking is prohibited in the building(s) and on school grounds.

STANDARDS

Crown Point Elementary is a standards-based school. Standards define academic expectations in all areas including art, music and P.E.. There are two kinds of standards: content and performance. Content standards define what a child should know at a given grade level. For example, a child should know his/her multiplication tables by third grade. Performance standards define what a child should know and how that knowledge is demonstrated. For example, a child should know his her multiplication tables and be able to use them to solve real-life math problems, such as determining how much a pair of shoes costs if there is a 20% discount.
