  1. The Main Office and Student Services are now located in the new part of the building and have their own separate entrance in front of the school.  All visitors must report to the main office for a visitor ID. 
     

  2. Early check out procedures are listed below: 
     

    • Early check out ends 30 minutes prior to the end of the school day.

    • An official picture ID MUST be presented each time a student is dismissed.

    • Students MUST be signed out by an authorized person only (18 years of age or older) as listed on their Student Information Card.
       

  3. Mrs. Meme Broadfoot has been selected as one of four 2012 First Coast Princeton Scholars.  As a First Coast Princeton Scholar she will be attending the First Coast Princeton Scholar’s Summer Experience on the Campus of Princeton University June 25 – June 29, 2012.  

    The seminar will introduce Mrs. Broadfoot to ancient Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, and Roman art collections, and will assist her in writing lessons that will incorporate visual art into her field of teaching and coaching. Three days will be spent at the Princeton Museum of Art and two days will be spent at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The seminar will include lectures, group discussions and gallery sessions.
     

  4. Dr. Scott Sowell, AP Environmental and Forensic Science teacher at Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School, has been selected as the 2012 Florida Blue Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made this evening at the annual EDDY Awards celebration on Thursday, March 8,, 2012. The event was held at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts as a joint venture of the Schultz Center for Teaching and Leadership and the Jacksonville Public Education Fund.

    "On behalf of Duval County Public Schools, I applaud Scott on achieving this elite honor in being named the Duval County Teacher of the Year," said Duval County Public Schools' Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals. "His ability to connect with students is unmatched, and his dedication is proven through his students' successes."

    Scott Sowell has been teaching for 12 years. He currently works as the head of the school's Science Department. Dr. Sowell also acts as a leader on the School Leadership Committee and the Shared Decision-Making Committee. He participates in presentations including those at the Magnet Schools of America annual conference and the Mentor for Novice teachers within Duval County MINT/TIP Program.
     

  5. Congratulations to Mrs. Rebecca Austin-Datta, Darnell-Cookman Chemistry Teacher, for being selected for a fellowship in the 2011-12 New Science Teacher Academy. The Academy is part of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the largest professional organization in the world, which promotes excellence and innovation in science teacher.   Click here to read more about this honor. 
     

  6. Congratulations to Dr. Scott Sowell, Darnell-Cookman's Teacher of the Year, for being named one of the district's Top Five finalists for the Duval County Public School's Teacher of the Year
     

  7. Rodney Hurst, author of “It was never about a hot dog and a Coke®!” subtitled “A Personal Account of the 1960 Sit-in Demonstrations in Jacksonville, Florida and Ax Handle Saturday” and published by WingSpan Press, recounted the times, the mood, and high racial tension in Jacksonville during the civil rights movement for a group of Darnell-Cookman high school students this past week.   Mr. Hurst has received critical acclaim for “It was never about a hot dog and a Coke®!” winning the 2008 USA Book News Book Award for Multi-Cultural Non-Fiction. Hurst’s book also won the 2008 Sabrina Book Reviews Award for Best General Non-Fiction Book and shared the 2008 Sabrina Book Reviews Award as the Top Book of the Year.   Click here to read more and see pictures from the event
     

  8. Congratulations to Mr. Grady Ricks for being named Darnell-Cookman's School-Related Employee of the Year.  Mr. Ricks has been employed by DCPS for the past 17 years and has been a member of the Darnell-Cookman family since February 2007. 
     

  9. Congratulations to Dr. Scott Sowell, Darnell-Cookman's Teacher of the Year, for being named one of the district's fifteen finalists for the Duval County Public School's Teacher of the Year
     

  10. Congratulations to Dr. Scott Sowell, Darnell-Cookman's Teacher of the Year for 2011-2012.  Dr. Sowell is currently teaching Forensics and AP Environmental Science and is the Science Department Chairperson as well as the Professional Development Facilitator.  Congratulations Dr. Sowell, you totally deserve it!!!
     

  11. Congratulations to Mrs. Grace Wilhelm for being named a semi-finalist in the School Counselor of the Year for the American School Counselor Association The School Counselor of the Year program honors the best of the best -- school counselors who are running a top-notch, comprehensive school counseling program at either the elementary, middle or high school level. This program brings up to 10 finalists and their nominators to Washington, D.C., in early February, where they participate in a congressional briefing, meet with their members of Congress and are honored at the School Counselor of the Year Gala.   12. The updated 2010-11 Comprehensive Student Support System (CSSS) is now available for viewing and/or downloading on the website.  The Comprehensive Student Support System was developed by a cross-divisional team as a way to define and effectively communicate how the Duval County Public School (DCPS) system provides services and resources to schools to meet the academic needs of all students.  In addition to listing and defining the numerous programs and/or services available to Duval students, the CSSS also divided the district’s more than 160 schools into three distinct “strands” based upon the intensity of regulatory oversight required at the district, state and/or federal levels.

  15. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!  Volunteers are an important part of student success in Duval County Public Schools. More than 20,000 volunteers support schools each year, and the number is growing. You can now apply online to be a volunteer.   Darnell-Cookman needs volunteers to help with landscaping projects, chaperoning field trips, tutoring students, helping in the media center, helping with student recognition programs, assisting with recruitment events, and working on other school beautification projects.  If you are interested in Volunteering, then please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Mrs. Fricker, at (904) 630-6800 ext. 1026.
     

  16. Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts is recognized by Magnet Schools of America as a 2011 Honorable Mention Merit School.  Darnell-Cookman is honored to be recognized by the nationally acclaimed Magnet Schools of America in Washington, D.C. The criteria for selection is based on a total commitment to the highest academic standards, innovation in curriculum, a culturally rich environment, and consistent and rigorous delivery of high quality education.  See list of Honorable Mention Award Winners
     

  17. Naval Hospital Jacksonville and Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School Partnership

    Naval Hospital Jacksonville (NH Jax), in collaboration with Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School's medical arts magnet program, recently kicked off its Science, Service, Medicine & Mentoring (S2M2) program during a special presentation at the school.

    The goal of NH Jax’s S2M2 program is to encourage, nurture and enhance Jacksonville high school students’ commitment to science and medicine in a welcoming and intellectually stimulating environment.

    “We are very excited to partner with Darnell-Cookman to help nurture the next generation of doctors and nurses through our S2M2 program,” said Naval Hospital Jacksonville Executive Officer, Capt. Jennifer Vedral-Baron. “The students participating in our inaugural summer program are bright, motivated and creative young people and our Naval Hospital Jacksonville healthcare team looks forward to providing them the opportunity to experience Navy medicine first-hand.”
     

  18. Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School announced as a 2008 National Blue Ribbon SchoolThe No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools award distinguishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap.
     

  19. The Florida Department of Education recently announced that 18 Duval County Public Schools were named 2007-2008 Five Star Schools. This symbol of achievement was created by the Commissioner's Community Involvement Council and is presented annually to those schools that have shown evidence of exemplary community involvement. This designation is the highest award for community participation.

    “This is a great achievement for our schools,” said Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals. “The Five Star School Award is the highest award for community involvement that is bestowed by the Florida Department of Education.”
