FREQUENTLY ASKED INFORMATION

 

ACCIDENTS

Every accident or injury in the school building, on the school grounds, at practice sessions, or at any athletic event sponsored by the school must be reported immediately to the person in charge. The school will process an accident report.

 

AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION

After school detention is held Monday through Thursday for one hour. Students will report to the courtyard (weather permitting) or the ISSP room (inclimate weather) immediately after school and remain with the appropriate dean until the end of the detention. Students must arrange for their own transportation home after detention. The activity bus does not leave until 5:00 p.m. On the day that they have detention, students may not be left unsupervised.

 

AFTER SCHOOL SUPERVISION

Students are allowed to remain on campus after 2:15 only if supervised by a teacher, a coach, or an administrator. The campus will be locked down at 2:30.  All students that remain on campus unsupervised will be referred to the deans. 

 

APPEARANCE CODE

1.  Shorts/pants/skirts must be secured and worn at waist level. Belts will be required if shorts/pants/skirts are not worn at waist level. Oversized, baggy, “dragging on the floor” pants are not permitted. Torn or ripped jeans, shirts, shorts are not permitted. This includes cutoffs, unhemmed jeans, shorts, pants and clothing with holes or rips. Shirts worn over t-shirts are not coats and are subject to Code of Appearance requirements. If sweatshirt or sweater is banded at the waist, it must fit properly-not long and baggy.

2.  T-shirts featuring material pertaining to alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, sexually explicit acts, violence, weapons, cults, gang activity, or inappropriate messages are not permitted as well as t-shirts intended to be worn as undershirts.

3.  *Overly tight, revealing, immodest, and/or distracting apparel is not permitted.

4.  Revealing clothing, such as halter tops, tank tops, crop tops, “see through” over blouses, spaghetti straps, cutout shirts, and midriff shirts, are not permitted. Underwear, such as undershirts, boxer shorts, and bras, are not permitted to be seen under regular clothing and not permitted as outerwear. Hemmed sleeveless shirts, not in violation of above listed requirements, may be worn.

5.  Shorts/dresses, skirts must be at least a mid-thigh minimum length and no shorter than 4” above the top of the knee. Lycra/stretch shirts, pants and skirts are not permitted.

6.  Jogging, athletic, i.e., jersey and nylon, bicycling, and swim apparel are not appropriate in the classroom. EHS athletic-issued jerseys/uniforms will be permitted for wear on game days.

7.  Gym clothes are permitted in the gym and P.E. areas only.

8.  Shoes must be appropriately worn for school.  Bedroom shoes and slippers are not permitted. Steel-toed shoes/boots are not permitted. If determined to be a safety factor, platform and very high heels may be prohibited.

9.  Unnatural hair coloring, that not within the spectrum of human hair coloring, will not be permitted. Hairstyles, which cause a distraction, will not be permitted.

10. Head coverings, included but not limited to caps, hats, hair wraps/stockings/scarves, bandannas, sweat bands, hair curlers, hair picks, are not permitted on campus. Sunglasses may not be worn inside the facility.

11. Jewelry or similar objects that are distracting, dangerous, and/or can be used as weapons, including dog chains, choker chains, wallet chains are not permitted. Pierced jewelry considered distracting and/or dangerous to the health of our students is not permitted.

12. All prescriptive eyewear must be appropriate for the school environment. Eyewear (contact lenses) designed for the purpose of attracting attention and/or creates a distraction to the education environment will not be permitted.

 

*Words such as inappropriate, distracting, overly tight, baggy, dangerous, revealing, immodest, etc., are subjective by nature. The school must retain the authority to make these judgments. The Englewood High School Appearance Code Committee and the administration reserve the right to determine the appropriateness of apparel to be worn at our school. Our interpretation of an infraction of one of the rules is often not the same as the student’s. We will always be available to hear from parents who disagree with our decision and ask for your cooperation in not sending a student back to school with the same or similar violation after they have been cited. This will assist us in preparing your student to enter the work force and become productive members of our society.

 

ATTENDANCE

When a student is absent, he/she must present a note stating the reason, signed by the parent or guardian including a phone number.  Upon returning to school from In-School Suspension Program (ISSP) or Outside School Suspension (OSS), a student must report to the dean’s office for a readmit and present it to each teacher.

 

Absences may restrict a student from participating in extracurricular activities including athletics, Grad Nite, prom, music festivals, language arts and subject area competitions, and field trips.

 

A student is considered absent when he/she misses more than 50% of a class period.

 

CAFETERIA RULES

Students will be assigned one of two lunch periods. Students are to remain in the area (inside the yellow line) of the cafeteria. Those eating are expected to clean up after themselves. Only seniors and select juniors who qualify for off-campus lunch privileges may leave the campus. Underclassmen are not allowed to leave campus for lunch.

 

CELLULAR PHONES AND PAGERS

Cellular telephones may be brought to school but must be stored in a locker, automobile, or school-designated area where it is out of sight.  The telephone must be kept in an “off” mode while on school property during regular school hours.  Any student who chooses to bring a cell phone to school will do so at his or her own risk.  School personnel will not be responsible for loss or theft of the telephone.

 

Students may possess electronic pagers only when specifically authorized by the principal in case of a medical emergency or other hardship. 

 

Violation of the conditions in this paragraph will result in the confiscation of the pager or cell phone by school officials, and may result in other disciplinary action as set forth in the Code of Student Conduct.  The pager or cell phone will only be returned to the student’s parent or legal guardian.

 

CHECKOUTS, CHECK INS, TARDIES

Checkout   Student is to bring to the dean’s office a signed note from a parent/guardian stating the time of checkout and a phone number where parent/guardian can be reached. The student will be given a yellow checkout slip that he/she keeps and upon return, presents to teacher(s) of missed class(es).  Students are not permitted to leave the campus without proper checkout through the attendance office.

 

Check ins/tardies   Students arriving at school after 7:15 a.m. are to check in at the attendance office. The attendance office will make the determination if the tardy is excused or unexcused using the same criteria as for an absence. Each student gets three tardies without penalty per term (90 days).

 

Penalty for tardiness is:

1-3        warning

4           1 day after-school detention

                  Referral to deans for 4 or more tardies       

5            2 days after-school detention

6 - 7       ISSP and parent contact                                        

8+          Suspension pending parent conference

 

The tardy policy will start over each term (1/2 year).

 

COMPUTER USE

To comply with state and federal regulations, the Duval County Public Schools require that all students using computer technology in the schools, including network and Internet services have the permission of their parent/guardian.  Students and parents/guardians must understand that the use of DCPS computers, network and Internet service is a privilege, which may be terminated by the school or DCPS for failing to abide by DCPS published guidelines (see Code of Conduct). 

 

Students and other users access a computer with a unique network accounts or ID and passwords.  IDs and passwords must never be shared. The person in whose name a network account is issued is responsible at all times for its proper use. 

 

DRIVER LICENSE NOTIFICATION

Pursuant to Florida Statutes, section 322.091, the principal or designee shall notify the district school board of students, 14 years or older, who accumulate 15 unexcused absences in a period of 90 calendar days. The school superintendent is then required to submit to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) the names of these students. The DHSMV will set up a file on the student that may result in the student losing his/her driving privilege.

 

ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT

Radios, CD players, iPods, MP3 players, tape players, game boys, PS3s or any other types of compact electronic equipment are not permitted in classroom areas. Items will be taken and returned to a parent or legal guardian at the end of the school year.  Students may be charged with a Class II offense and be subject to disciplinary action as determined by the assistant principal for student services.  Englewood High School will not be responsible for items that are stolen from lockers, classrooms, book bags, etc.

 

EMERGENCY BLUE CARDS

At the beginning of each year, students are given blue emergency cards containing important information in case the student has an emergency at school. Parents need to complete these cards and return them to school as soon as possible.

 

FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH PROGRAM

As a participant in the National School Lunch Program, the Duval County Public School system provides both breakfast and lunch meals for students. Costs are as follows: breakfast is $.75; elementary lunch is $1.30; secondary lunch is $1.45; and extra milk is $.30. Free and reduced price meals are available to eligible students. Applications for free and reduced lunch can be obtained in the dean’s office. The parent/guardian must complete the application and have student return form to dean’s office. Notification will be made after application is processed and approved.

 

GUIDANCE SERVICES

Guidance counselors are available to assist students in social, educational, vocational, and/or personal development. This includes assistance with educational planning, interpretation of test scores, and career information. A parent may arrange an appointment with a counselor or a teacher by calling or visiting the guidance department. When a student knows in advance of an absence for more than 4 days, a parent can request assignments in advance. Teachers need a 24-hour notice to get assignments together.

 

HARASSMENT/SEXUAL

It is the policy that all persons convey respect and consideration for each other regardless of race, color, marital status, national origin, creed, religion, gender, age, or disability. Acts of harassment, hostility, or defamation, whether verbal, written, or physical, will not be tolerated.

 

Sexual harassment includes all unwanted, uninvited, and non-reciprocal sexual attention as well as the creation of an intimidating, hostile or offensive school or work environment. Harassment can include: sexually suggestive looks or gestures, sexual jokes, pictures, or teasing, deliberate touching, cornering or pinching, attempts to kiss or fondle, threats, demands or suggestions that favors will be granted in exchange for sex.  Students are subject to disciplinary action for harassment of any type.

 

IDENTIFICATION BADGE (ID)

For safety and security reasons, no student will be permitted on campus or into class without an EHS I.D. displayed on a school issued lanyard. Students arriving without an I.D. will have to contact a parent to bring their I.D. to school or the student will have to purchase a replacement I.D. Replacement IDs may be obtained for $8.00 ($5 for the ID, $2 for the lanyard, and $1 for the plastic holder).

 

IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION

The in-school suspension program is provided as an alternative to outside suspension for minor infractions. Students will be placed in ISSP no more than four (4) times during either half of the school year. Students will be responsible for completing classwork provided by their classroom teacher as well as participation in school pride activities. They will have lunch at times other than the regular school schedule. Upon completion of ISSP, students will obtain a readmit from the dean to return to their classes.

 

LOCKERS

Every student may rent a lock and locker for $5.00. Lockers cannot be shared. It is the student’s responsibility to see that his/her locker is kept locked at all times. Only school combination locks are to be used and lockers are subject to search. Bookbags must be kept in the locker during the school day.

 

LOST AND FOUND

Any articles found on campus should be brought to the dean’s office. If a student has lost something on campus, he/she may check with the dean’s office to see if the item has been returned.

 

MEDIA CENTER

The Media Center offers a variety of materials which can be accessed through our online card catalogue at http://destiny.dreamsbeginhere.org.  Normal hours are:  7:05 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.  Students must have their school ID and a Media Center Pass from their teacher to enter the media center. Students may get lunch passes up until the beginning of 3rd block and spend their lunch period in the media center. 

 

The Media Center has books, magazines, pamphlets, newspapers, CD-ROM/stations, and computers for assignments and recreational reading.  Students may check out up to three materials at a time with their EHS ID.  Students may not check out or renew materials if they owe a media fine.  There is a $.05 per day late fee for materials not returned on time and a replacement charge for materials not returned. 

 

MEDICATION

If a student must take medication during the school day, the student MUST bring the medication in its original container to the dean’s office upon arrival to school. The parent MUST sign an authorization and usage form BEFORE the school will dispense any medication. This policy also applies to over-the-counter medications.

 

PARKING

Students driving automobiles must purchase parking permits for $10.00 in the dean’s office. Student cars in the parking lot without a decal will be towed at owner’s expense. Seniors may park in the side parking lot and underclassmen must park in the back parking lot. Students may NOT go to their cars during school hours. Cars parked on campus are subject to search. Students leaving campus in their car without permission will lose parking privileges.

 

RIDING THE SCHOOL BUS

Riding the school bus and activity bus is a privilege extended to students. This privilege can be removed at any time for disruptive behavior.

 

SCHOOL INSURANCE

Applications for student accident insurance plans will be distributed at the beginning of the school year. Completed application is mailed directly to the company. The insurance policy covers students engaging in school-sponsored activities and sports (except football).

 

SEARCH AND SEIZURE POLICY

In compliance with Florida State Statute 232.256, random searches of students, their belongings, lockers, and/or cars are conducted routinely for the safety of all students. School authorities may seize any contraband substance or object, the possession of which is illegal, or any material or object, which violates school rules or poses a hazard to the safety and good order of the school. The student in possession will face disciplinary action.

 

Possession and/or use of tobacco products, lighters, and/or matches are prohibited. Violation may result in out-of-school suspension and offenders are subject to all State and local laws prohibiting smoking on school campuses and smoking/possession by a minor.  Students are not to bring these items on school grounds or to any school-sponsored function. The school does not accept responsibility for the loss of seized items.

 

SPIRIT DAY

Every Friday is spirit day. Show your spirit by wearing your special Englewood T-shirt, sweatshirt, sweater, or jacket. Many clubs and athletic teams sell Englewood clothing.

 

STUDENT OPTION FOR SUCCESS (SOS) PROGRAM

Students who commit at least five (5) Class II Code of Conduct Offenses must be referred to the Student Option for Success (SOS) Program.  Students who refuse or fail to enroll in the SOS program are required to sign a form acknowledging that the program was offered.  The parent is also required to sign the form.  Upon refusal, the principal/designee should advise the student and parent that a recommendation will be made to the Hearing Officer for placement in an alternative education school. 

 

In cases of extreme and excessive misbehavior, the SOS program may not be an option, and the student could be referred directly to the Hearing Officer for placement consideration in an alternative school setting.  This determination is to be made by the principal/designee.

 

TELEPHONES

Only emergency calls can be made from the phone in the deans’ offices.

 

TRANSFER/WITHDRAWAL NOTICE

Parents/guardians must initiate all transfer/withdrawal notices in the dean’s office. All books and school materials including school locks must be returned and all financial obligations must be cleared before the withdrawal or notice of transfer is complete.

 

VISITORS

All visitors must report to the main office. All visitors must have a valid picture ID which must be presented at the front desk where they will be registered and receive a visitor’s badge. Students may not have visitors on campus.
