Mini Lesson: 10-15 Minutes

Each one of my Reading Workshop sessions begins with a mini lesson lasting approximately 10-15 minutes. Each mini lesson focuses on a reading strategy; such as, predicting, visualizing, connecting, or questioning. There may be times where a strategy is studied over the course of several days, in which case the mini lessons for that entire week will be related to that reading strategy.   Click below to preview sample minilessons and materials.

Independent Work Time: 35 - 40 Minutes

During independent work time students work with partners, in guided reading groups, or individually practicing a particular reading strategy.  They write in Response Notebooks, participate in one-one conferencing, and work on reading projects with their groups or partners.  It is very important that your child know how to work with a partner or in  a group cooperatively during this time.

Closing: 10 - 15 Minutes

Each Reader's Workshop ends with a closing.  During the closing students share and discuss what they learned as they worked during the work period.  Students are given the opportunity to discuss books, strategies, strengths, and weaknesses.  This is a valuable component of the workshop model.
