Grade Recovery is a program to assist students who have made an effort to be successful in a course but have failed to make adequate progress to meet standards during a grading period. To be eligible for Grade Recovery, a student
must have earned a D or F as a quarter of final grade.
must have made a good faith effort to perform class work or have accepted additional assistance offered during the grading period.
must have completed all work that was missed due to a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and must comply with the attendance policy as determined in the School Board Policy Manual: Missed work shall be made up for all absences; a day of make-up work shall be allowed for each day of absence. Each student shall receive full credit for such work.
must complete Grade Recovery prior to the end of the following grading period. The time may be extended at the discretion of the principal. Students making less than satisfactory progress at any point during the 4th quarter must begin immediate recovery and must complete that recovery prior to the end of the school year, unless the principal determines that an extension of time is appropriate.
must not have engaged in plagiarism or cheating specifically identified by the teacher which resulted in the unsatisfactory grade.
Grade Recovery Process Summary
Credit Recovery occurs when a student has failed a course. Several programs are available for students to recover a lost credit. However, students must meet stringent criteria, and the student's guidance counselor must approve their participation in one of the following programs:
A.L.C.: (Accelerated Learning Center) an after school program for students who have failed a course.
FORIDA VIRTUAL SCHOOL: an on-line course for students who have failed a course OR for those who need another course in order to graduate. See your Guidance Counselor for information.
FCAT Preparedness Plan (back to top)
First Coast High School continues its commitment to academic excellence. In addition to the regular standards-based curriculum taught in every class throughout the school year, January marks the beginning of our Focus Days, Scrimmages, and Stop, Drop, Read And Write for FCAT preparation.
Focus Day is a school-wide program of scripted lessons. Students are assigned to a classroom. They are sorted by grade, house, gender, and FCAT Level. Whenever possible, 2 teachers have been assigned to each group of students. During FCAT, these students will test in these locations.
Scrimmages are mock FCATs. Students will report to their test location and will take a mock FCAT. In most cases, the test is a former FCAT that has been released by the state. Reading Scrimmage is February 1; Math Scrimmage is February 21.
Stop, Drop, Read, and Write is a school-wide program designed to improve critical thinking skills necessary for success on FCAT Reading. A designated 15-minute segment is being added to the beginning of 2nd block each day beginning January 22 and ending March 5. Each day students read an article. These articles increase in length and difficulty over time.
Students are asked to respond in writing to a short/extended response-type question. Students are scored on a 3-point rubric: 3 = they completed the assignment as given; 2 = they attempted the assignment but did not complete it; 1 = they began the assignment; 0 = they did not do the assignment.
Senior ACT/SAT preparation and college/career informational sessions - Seniors who have passed the Reading and Math FCAT will attend sessions on ACT/SAT prep., college and career planning, and graduation requirement credit checks.
This year we are using the I.R.I.S Alert system to notify you if your child missed a Focus Day or Scrimmage session. Encourage your child to take advantage of every opportunity to prepare for the FCAT.
Target (offered after school from 2:30 - 3:30) is another chance for your child to get "targeted" FCAT preparation. Contact your child's English, Math, or Science teacher for Target days.
WWW.FCATEXPLORER.COM - is a free online FCAT preparation tool. Each student at First Coast has a user name and password provided by his/her English or Math teacher. If your child does not know his/her user name and/or password, call 757-0080 ext. 202. We will be glad to give you that information.
FCAT Simulation CD's for Reading, Math, and Science: If you would like a free copy of "The FCAT Simulation" - Benchmark Assessment and Test Simulation Software for PC and Mac, call 757-0080, ext 202.
The Florida Department of Education offers numerous state testing-related resources and support materials for teachers and parents such as the following:
