"Knowledge for College"

Vocabulary Acquisition Plan

Steps:

All students must bring their “Knowledge for College” notebook  to each class every day.

In his morning announcements, the principal will announce a new root word or prefix every two days.  (Students will copy that information into their “Knowledge for College” notebook.

In each class, students will receive a different word that is based on that root word or prefix.

Teachers will have students record the words in their notebooks and complete one simple, short activity with the new word.

Periodically, teachers will be asked to check that students have brought their notebooks to class and are keeping up with their assignments.

The academic coaches will also provide periodic quizzes to check students’ retention of these words.

 Suggested Activities:

Use the word in a sentence, and have students infer its meaning based on context clues.

Provide students with a definition, and allow them to write their own sentence using the given word.

Provide students with a definition, and allow them to draw an illustration of the word.

Have students think of synonyms and/or antonyms for the word.

Have students think of a personal connection to that word.

Have students think of a memory device for the word.
