HS EOC Parent Letter (2).docx

January 26, 2012

Dear Parent/Guardian of a High School Student:

For the second year, Florida students enrolled in certain high school courses must take a state-mandated End-of-Course (EOC) assessment.  This year the state assessment requirement applies to students enrolled in Algebra I, Biology and Geometry. The state EOC is taken by students online and represents a new era in the way students will be taking many of their state-required assessments. Please take a moment to review the following information in order to allow us to keep you and your student(s) fully informed.

This assessment will be administered via a computer-based program.  Paper-based versions will be provided for students with disabilities whose Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) or Section 504 plans require this accommodation.  The assessment will be administered in a 160 minute session with a 10-minute break after 80 minutes. Should you wish to preview the format of the assessment, you can do so by following the instructions at the link below:  http://www.flassessments.com/epats

The testing window for students taking Geometry and Geometry Honors is April 30-May 11, for Biology, Biology Honors, Biology 1 PRE-IB or Pre-AICE Biology is April 30-May 11, and for  Algebra I, Algebra I Honors or Pre-AICE Math 1is May 7 -28.

Depending on the grade level and past academic history of the students, the assessment will affect student grades differently. A breakdown is as follows:

Before 2010-2011

If the student is in the 9th grade for the first time this year and is enrolled in Algebra I or Algebra I Honors, s/he must pass the state EOC to earn Algebra I credit. The course grade comes from the course work completed in the classroom, but the Algebra I credit comes from passing the EOC, so a student could get a B in the course but if they fail the EOC they would get 0.00 credit.  If a student entered ninth grade for the first time last year, the EOC will count 30% of his/her final grade.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact your school counseling office.

Sincerely,

Signature LeRoy
