Open Arms Christian Fellowship

We would like to thank the CkeckRedi Collection Company for providing pencils for FCAT testing.  The company’s logo supported our FCAT theme -- Rested, Relaxed and Ready!

There will be a school-wide focus on manners this week at Garden City to address concerns about cafeteria behavior and inappropriate verbal interactions amongst our students.  Our teachers will read Perfect Pigs: An Introduction to Manners in each classroom.  A review and practice of school-wide rituals and routines and discussions will follow.  Please help by discussing appropriate school behavior with your children.  Thank you!

April Principal’s Book of the Month

The Six Fools

 Collected by Zora Neale Hurston

Adapted by Joyce Carol Thomas

Product Details

Stories about foolish adults make kids laugh and feel superior. Joyce Thomas' adaptation, from Zora Hurston's 1930s folklore collection Every Tongue Got to Confess, is a good example. A young man thinks his fiancée and her parents are the biggest fools he has ever laid eyes on--until he searches the world and finds fools everywhere: a man jumping up in the air to get into his trousers, a woman trying to haul sunshine into her kitchen in a wheelbarrow, and more. The characters are depicted with rolling eyes and exaggerated gestures.  Children will love the uproar and the nonsense.

Parent Tips

Bullying Prevention

Bullying has become a concern at Garden City.  Each student has the right to feel safe at school.  Please discuss this issue with your children.  Please let your child’s teacher know if he or she is a victim of bullying at our school.

 It will be dealt with.

Florida Statute 1006.147, “The Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up for All Students Act," prohibits bullying and harassment of any student or employee of a public K-12 educational institution.

Bullying is specifically defined as systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more students and may involve teasing, social exclusion, threat, intimidation, stalking, physical violence, theft, sexual, religious, or racial harassment, public humiliation, or destruction of property.

Harassment is any threatening, insulting, or dehumanizing gesture, use of data or computer software, or written, verbal, or physical conduct directed against a student or school employee that places a student or school employee in reasonable fear of harm to his or her person or damage to his or her property, has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s educational performance, opportunities, or benefits, or has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of a school.

Bullying and harassment can be direct (face to face) or indirect (behind somebody's back). It usually occurs in areas with the least structure and adult supervision such as on the playground, school bus, in bathrooms, locker rooms, hallways, and at bus stops. It may also occur on the phone, through video and text messages, three-way calling, or on the internet.

Bullying and/or harassment will not be tolerated in the Duval County Public System.
