               Garden City’s Science Fair

The science fair is one of the exciting events we have at our school.  It is to take place on April 24th. Your child has been exposed to the scientific process by participating in a class science project.  All classes have done a science experiment which has been placed in front of the library for all to view.  There have been many interesting experiments going on at Garden City and you are invited to stop by and learn something new.  Do you know what foods ants like best?  The students in Ms. Cook’s second grade classroom do.  All the students in third thru fifth grade will participate in this event and kindergarten thru second grade students are encouraged to join in the fun.  The best projects from each class will be submitted to the science fair. There will be judges to decide which projects are the best.  The projects will be displayed in our cafeteria on April 24th for the science fair..  Please help and encourage your child as they explore the scientific method.  Do you know the scientific process?

                                   Scientific Method:

1.        Identify a problem (purpose)

2.        Hypothesis

3.        Conduct the experiment

4.        Record your observations

5.        Draw a conclusion

The projects are due on April 15th, now is the time to get started.  . If you would like more information about science experiments you can look on our schools website, the address is http://duvalschools.org/gardencity.

We encourage our parents to be actively involved in their children’s education.  Research shows that students have greater school success when their parents are involved.  Your children need your involvement and support.  We do too.  Our remaining family involvement activities are listed below.  Please put these dates on your calendar

  • Grades 4 & 5 Program – April 15
  • April 17, 18, & 22Awards ProgramsSee calendar

Reading Challenge

Our students are very close to achieving our school’s READING GOAL – 13,875 books!  Our students have met half the goal by Chrhistmas  so on March 27th Kathy Tarkington sat in a dunking booth and the top readers in each class threw a ball at the target.  She went down and got wet several times as the crowd cheered!  What will Ms. Sapp do when we reach our Reading Goal?  Will she sit in a pool of pudding on Dunn Ave.???

READING IS COOL!!

Are You Instilling Respect in Your Child?

It’s important to teach your child to be respectful in all situations, including home and school.  Answer the following questions yes or no to see if you’re promoting a respectful attitude:

1.  Do you model respectful behavior for your child by being polite?
2.  Do you expect your child to follow established rules at home, school and in other places?
3.  Do you discuss with your child that while you may not always agree with another point of view, it is still important
     to hear another side?
4.  Do you emphasize the importance of manners, including saying please and thank you?
5.  Do you talk with your child about respectful ways to disagree?

How did you do?  Each yes answer means you are working to raise a respectful child.  For each no answer, consider using the suggestion from the quiz to change your answer to yes.

Reading Power

What’s that word?

To understand and enjoy a story, your child needs to know what the words mean.  Luckily, the story itself often holds the keys to figuring out unfamiliar vocabulary.  Suggest these strategies to improve your child’s reading comprehension.

Look at the word.  Knowing the part of speech can give a clue to the words meaning.  Tip:  Show your child that word ending in ed or ing (laughed/laughing) are usually verbs, while those ending in ly (slowly) are often adverbs.  Example:  When Luke dropped the cookie, it crumbled into pieces.  Your child might think, “Crumbled is probably a verb.  What would a cookie do if I dropped it?  Crumbled might mean broke apart.”

Look at the sentence.  Sometimes familiar words can reveal a new word’s meaning. Example:  “I tried talking, arguing, and begging, but I couldn’t persuade Dad to but a puppy.  Your child might think, “Talking, arguing and begging are ways to convince someone.  Persuade could mean convince.”

Look at the paragraph.  If the sentence doesn’t help, encourage your youngster to keep reading.  The events that follow might clear things up.  Example:  “The nail punctured the tire.  Air hissed out, and the tire went flat.”  You child might think, “The next sentence says air came out of the tire.  Punctured may mean made a hole.”

To really enjoy a story you must understand it.  Try this tip with your child.
