Science Fair

The annual Science Fair was a great success!  To a standing room only crowd, certificates were presented to finalist from each grade level.  Six winners were selected from each grade level.  These students received a science themed lanyard and medal.

Our students in grades three, four and five were required to submit a science project.  We are proud that 87% of our students participated.  Students in grades kindergarten, first and second were encouraged to submit a project as well.  Twelve percent of these students participated.

Well done Garden City scientist!

We encourage our parents to be actively involved in their children’s education.  Research shows that students have greater school success when their parents are involved.  Your children need your involvement and support.  We do too.  Our remaining family involvement activities are listed below.  Please put this date on your calendar

  • Grades 2 & 3 Programs – May 13

All activities/programs begin at 6:30 p.m.

We will celebrate

Book of the Month

Because

by

Mikhail Baryshnikov

Because . . .

Mikhail Baryshnikov dances onto the stage of celebrity authors with a playful book about being true to oneself regardless of how others react. A boy recounts how his grandmother always embarrasses him, beginning with Monday when she leaps over a neighbor's head. As the week progresses, he quickly overcomes his discomfort and by Sunday has learned the reason behind her eccentric behavior. Fact and fantasy intermingle freely as the child describes his neighborhood, and everyone from the crossing guard to an alley cat responds to Grandma's antics by asking, Why? She brushes off their questions with a breezy because until she finally explains as she flies off into the sky, Because

I-am-a-dancer!

You may check out the book of the month from our Media Center.

Parent Power         Help Your Child Grow

There is nothing more important than your children and contributing to their achievements.  Become their greatest supporter!

Make time each day to be a part of your child's educational and social activities. Help your child study.  Make sure they complete and understand their homework.  Review the work that they are doing.  Play a game, watch television or read a book together. Know your kid's friends.  Learn what motivates your child, in and out of school.  Help your child set goals and measure their progress.  Praise achievement.  Talk with your child every day.  Talk to your child's teachers about any teacher conference concerns before they become a problem.

There are many resources offering effective parenting tips and providing more ideas for increasing your participation and enhancing your satisfaction in sharing your kid's journey.

Putting Reading First            Summer Reading – DO IT!

The long hot days of summer provide lots of time to read.  Researchers commonly find that students score lower on standardized test at the end of the summer than they do at the beginning.  Please have your child read at least 30 minutes daily during the summer.  They should retell the key story elements – characters, setting, problem, three major events and how the problem was solved.  Encourage your child to learn, read and have fun in the summer sun.

Math Moment

Don’t forget about mathematics during the summer months.  Study your mathematics facts daily during the summer.
