Highlands Elementary School officially opened its doors in September, 1958. It is a Title I school in need of improvement (SINI) with a state grade of “B” located on Jacksonville’s north side. In addition to our regular academic program, several other services are available for our students. We provide a federally funded Title I Pre-Kindergarten program, as well as speech and language therapy, emotionally handicapped/specific learning disabilities resource, and fulltime guidance. In 2003, an autistic department was added to our curriculum. Recently, Highlands Elementary School received a federal grant through The No Child Left Behind Amendment (Reading First Program for K-3 only). Highland's population includes approximately 420 students. • Student population is predominately African American (80%). • Eighty-four percent (84%) of the students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. • Teacher /student ratio is 18:1 in grades K-3 and 22:1 in grades 4 and 5. • There’s one pre-K class, 4 kindergarten classes, four 1st grade classes, four 2nd grade classes, four 3rd grade classes, three 4th grade classes, two 5th grade classes, and five autistic classes. |
