Extended Day
"Committed to the development and management of safe, affordable, structured, and well-supervised care before and after school for students of working parents."

What We Do

Our Extended Day Enrichment Program provides working parents an environmentally safe and convenient location to leave their children before- and after-school.

For a nominal fee, Extended Day provides academic enhancement, tutoring and remediation activities that reflect the standards-based reading and mathematics efforts of our school. The program also provides a variety of other before- and after-school enrichment activities for students that may include computers, recreational activities, cooking, music, arts and crafts, as well as special events.

The fees have are $52 monthly for Morning care (7am to 8 am).  $100 monthly for Afternoon care (3pm to 6 pm) and $152 for both am and pm care.  For "Early Bird" care (6:30 to 7 a.m.) the fee is $16.  If you have any further questions regarding Extended Day services, please call 573-1123, ext 309.

Guidance
Our comprehensive school counseling program is designed to meet the needs of every student and include the following services:

Classroom guidance lessons help students understand themselves and others. Through classroom guidance, school counselors help students develop peer relationships; effective social, decision-making, and study skills; effective communications, conflict resolution, and coping strategies; and more.

Responsive services assist students with particular needs such as adjusting to a new school, coping with grief following a crisis, and dealing with substance abuse or other risky behaviors. These services are provided through individual and small group counseling, peer facilitation and consultation, and referrals to professionals trained in mental health, welfare, and other specialties.

System support enhances school climate and relationships among members of the school community. School counselors coordinate parent outreach services, community support services, and consultations with other faculty and staff.

Media

The Jacksonville Heights Elementary Library is an exciting place to visit this year.  We have worked very hard at planning some literary event for each month we are in school.  Please refer to your Jacksonville Herald or the Events Calendar on our web site for more information regarding upcoming events.

We have two Book Fairs planned for this year.  We hope everyone takes advantage of these opportunities to get books in the hands of our students.  This is also the Library’s major fundraiser.  Everyone is aware of the budget cuts made by Duval County, we unfortunately were not spared.  We are trying very hard to raise money to purchase new books for the library.  Hopefully by years end we will have purchased at least one new book per student.

The Library is open from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm daily.

We are always looking for volunteers and enjoy having visitors.  Come in and check us out!

Safety Nets

In order to ensure greater success for all students, Safety Nets provide opportunities for students who need an "extra push" in order to show growth.  Such opportunities may include:

  •  Pulling groups of students with similar needs for extra instruction

  •  Repeating instruction using a different method.

  •  Allowing a student to redo an assignment after more instruction is given

  •  After school tutoring

  •  Have a parent volunteer read with the student or rework a solution

  •  Use alternative instructional materials

  •  Buddy Learning, assigning a buddy to assist a student with note taking or assignment completion

  •  Computer centers, FCAT Explorer

Inclusion

Jacksonville Heights Elementary is strongly committed toward a more inclusive approach to educating students. Many students with disabilities will be leaving self contained settings and returning to their neighborhood schools with their friends. We, at Jacksonville Heights will be providing specialized services such as consultation with General Education teachers and parents, in-class, and other supports to meet the needs of all students.

ESE teachers will be serving the needs of Exceptional Education students in the General Education classroom.  General and Exceptional Education students will be learning side-by-side. In many cases, the classroom will be staffed with two teachers, working collaboratively to meet the needs of ALL students in the classroom!  Experience is showing that in these settings, all students are showing improved performance.  Come take a peek!  We dare you to tell regular from exceptional students in our inclusion classrooms!  Contact Mr. Mac or Mrs. Crosby for more details.

If you would like to learn more about the inclusion process, Duval County has a presentation for you to read.  Click here to see this presentation:  Inclusion Presentation

You can also visit the County's Exceptional Education web site to learn more.
