NEW JWJ TROJANS!!!

Vision / Mission / Belief Statements

The vision of James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School is to prepare all students for tomorrow by offering challenging academics and creative learning experiences, by promoting individual growth in a cooperative environment, and by fostering a commitment to school and community today.

As a part of the Duval County Public School System we are committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy and culturally diverse world.  As an organization, James Weldon Johnson along with the School Board also is committed to the following core beliefs:

  • The academic success of every student in Duval County is the top priority of the Duval County School Board.

  • The Duval County School Board believes that our greatest strength as a school district is the racial, gender, ethnic, and socio-economic diversity of our students and community.

  • The achievement gap in Duval County can and must be eliminated.

  • All DCPS children can be academically prepared to reach their dreams.

  • All DCPS children can learn at grade level.

  • Every school in Duval County can be a high-performing organization, both academically and operationally.

  • High quality teachers, supported with high quality, on-going professional development, must drive our rigorous, intellectually and artistically challenging curriculum.

  • Academic and operational resources can and must be adequately distributed throughout all DCPS schools.

All schools can be safe learning environments where every student and adult is valued and respected.

As a dedicated Gifted and Academically Talented Magnet School, JWJ involves students, parents and teachers in the pursuit of excellence through diversity, dedication, enthusiasm and academics. Just as important, we understand the challenges faced by middle-school students and are responsive to their unique developmental needs during these transition years.

GENERAL INFORMATION

A RICH CURRICULUM

Our goal is to prepare students for advanced college-preparatory courses at the high-school level. To accomplish this, JWJ offers only advanced classes for gifted and academically talented students. Each student must take the core academic classes every year, along with physical education/health and an elective.

Our wide-ranging elective opportunities include art (2D and 3D), band, chorus, computers, French, Spanish, media production, and journalism. Through our Exploratory Wheel program sixth graders experience an overview of the elective courses offered, rotating every 4-1/2 weeks through eight different
classes during the year.

A TOTAL SCHOOL EXPERIENCE

James Weldon Johnson stresses a total-school experience for all students. Many sports are offered, including football, championship soccer, cheerleading, swimming
and track. Athletic
facilities are shared with
Edward Waters College.

Students are also encouraged to participate in activities showcasing their talents, including writing contests, school band/chorus concerts,
and art shows.

Several co-curricular activities are available for our students, as well. These include peer tutoring, intramural sports, grade-level academic competitions, newspaper, yearbook, student council, and National Junior Honor Society.
